Caulfield Guineas Betting & Odds
The Caulfield Guineas is always an interesting betting race, but most years there is a standout colt or gelding that starts the race as a fairly short-priced favourite. However, from 1983 – 2017 only 11 favourites have won the Caulfield Guineas and the likes of Rich Enuff (2014), Pierro (2012) and Encosta De Lago (1996) were beaten as odds-on favourites. There have not been a great deal of upsets in the history of the Caulfield Guineas, but Econsul (2004), In Top Swing (2003), Centro (1990), Procol Harum (1989), Marwong (1987) and Abaridy (1986) all won the race at lengthy quotes. That was until the 2017 Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas results, when $101 roughie Mighty Boss saluted at triple figures.

Caulfield Guineas Tips
The Caulfield Guineas is the feature race on the opening day of the Caulfield Carnival and because of this the majority of racing experts have a set of Caulfield Guineas tips every year. The majority of horses that contest the Caulfield Guineas come through a similar form line, but this does not necessarily make it easy to pick the winner.
Good Caulfield Guineas betting tips include looking for the colts and geldings that ran well in key lead-up races including the Caulfield Guineas Prelude and the Stan Fox Stakes. From 2014-17 three of the four Caulfield Guineas winners had their final lead-up in the Stan Fox Stakes including Shooting To Win (2014) and Press Statement (2015) who both completed the double.
2017 Caulfield Guineas Tips
Our insider Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas 2017 betting tips and Group 1 racing selections will be detailed below the week of the race so stay tuned for the gallopers to back and sack in the $2 million classic.
- 1st: #5 SHOWTIME ($11) – Double-figures looks genuine on this Team Hawkes-trained Snitzel colt, the stable chasing back-to-back wins in the race. Is on the improve and comes off a good win in the Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m) at the same distance at The Valley. Proven over the metres, Showtime gets the run of the race from barrier one. The inside alley has produced eight Caulfield Guineas winners (since 1983) including Divine Prophet last year and Whobegotyou (2008) was the last to do the Stutt Stakes – Guineas double. Plenty of boxes ticked and the value is nice.
- 2nd: #7 GOLD STANDARD ($9.50) – This horse won the Stan Fox Stakes over 1500m two back in Sydney, a race that has produced the past three Caulfield Guineas winners. He’s been somewhat forgotten however after the fourth in the Golden Rose Stakes. There was a runaway winner that day and he’ll be better getting up over a mile. Needs to race this way for the first time, but drawn well (6) and shapes-up as an Each Way chance at close to $10.
- 3rd: #6 ROYAL SYMPHONY ($4.20) – This Tony McEvoy-trained colt has been leading Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas odds all along and retains top spot in the markets despite a lead-up loss. The Caulfield Guineas Prelude fourth, where he ran off some good late sectionals, was his first career defeat and he’ll be eager to atone. Regular rider Dwayne Dunn is on again chasing successive victories after riding last year’s winner and the winkers on will sharpen up this year’s favourite.
Caulfield Guineas Field
The Caulfield Guineas field is released on the Tuesday morning before the race and features a capacity field of 16 runners plus four emergencies. The Caulfield Guineas field last ran at capacity in 2015 when Press Statement saluted for the punters. In 2017 the sole emergency for the Caulfield Guineas field – Mighty Boss – made the line-up and won in a massive boilover at odds of $101.
Gallopers may come into the Caulfield Guineas field via a number of different spring lead-ups, but the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) run a fortnight earlier is the traditional lead-up run. Recent winners of the Prelude – Caulfield Guineas double include Anacheeva (2010) and Helmet (2011).
The official 2017 Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas Field of Final Acceptances was announced on Tuesday October 10, 2017.
A capacity line-up of three-year-olds are accepted for the Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas Field 2017 including the filly Catchy out to beat the boys in the race for the first time since Surround (1976). The inside barrier has produced more Caulfield Guineas winners than any other, including last year’s champion Divine Prophet (2016), and belongs on Saturday to last start Stutt Stakes winner Showtime.
