Ladbrokes Tip: Sandown Guineas winners often come off a Carbine Club Stakes run on Derby Day

The Sandown Guineas is a Group 2 feature race held at Sandown’s Ladbrokes Park in mid-November at the tail end of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

The meeting runs on the second Saturday of the month after the Melbourne Cup Carnival finishes up the week before with Emirates Stakes Day at Flemington.

Sandown Guineas Day is headlined by two Group 2 races including the Zipping Classic (2400m) for stayers. Also on the card are the Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1300m), Group 3 Sandown Stakes (1500m), Group 3 Eclipse Stakes (1800m), Group 3 Summoned Stakes (1500m) and for the two milers the Listed Sandown Cup (3200m) is another feature.

Run over a mile (1600m), the race offers $250,000 in total prize money to the three-year-olds in the field that face off under set weights and is usually the final spring run of the campaign for its contestants.

Our Ladbrokes’ insider Sandown Guineas 2017 betting tips and Group 2 race selections for Sandown will be detailed below the week of the race so stay tuned for the three-year-olds to back in the Group 2 this spring.

  • 1st: #1 SNITZEPEG ($5) – Tipping the Darren Weir-trained recent dual black-type winner over 1400m to improve on the very close fifth in the Carbine Club Stakes over the Flemington mile on Derby Day. Was narrowly beaten after getting caught too far back. Late sectionals were outstanding and he’ll be closer on the speed for his second mile start and hard to beat in the Group 2.
  • 2nd: #4 HYPNOTIST ($11) – Peter Snowden-trained galloper lost a few admirers when ninth in the Carbine Club Stakes, but was caught wide. Gets a better run here and can atone with Snowden and jockey Kerrin McEvoy chasing their fifth win in this race together.
  • 3rd: #11 I’LL HAVE A BIT ($16) – Good price offered on the John McArdle-trained filly taking on the boys from a gun barrier (2). Has experience over the distance including the Group 2 MV Fillies Classic (1600m) second last time out. Gets the weight advantage and can finish in the money.

Recent winners of the Carbine Club Stakes – Sandown Guineas double include Mahuta (2015), Paximadia (2013) and Kidnapped (2009). In 2016 the Carbine Club Stakes again proved the form to follow into the Sandown Guineas with Morton’s Fork improving on a lead-up second to win.

Another possible lead-up run is the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on Derby Day, a race the 2015 runner-up Dal Cielo (6th) came off. The most recent Sandown Guineas winner to come off a Coolmore Stud Stakes run was Pressday (11th) in 2013.

The 2014 winner Petrology also won his lead-up run at Flemington, while that year’s runner-up Stratum Star came off a Carbine Club Stakes second. Two years earlier in 2012 the Carbine Club Stakes winner Lunar Rise ran second to Tatra in the Sandown Guineas, Tatra turning the tables after a Carbine Club Stakes second.
