Sandown Guineas 2016

Saturday November 12th

Ladbrokes Tip: Sandown Guineas winners often come off a Carbine Club Stakes run on Derby Day

The Sandown Guineas is a Group 2 feature race held at Sandown Park Hillside in mid-November during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

The meeting runs on the second Saturday of the month after the Melbourne Cup Carnival finishes up the week before with Emirates Stakes Day at Flemington.
Sandown Guineas Day is headlined by two Group 2 races including the Zipping Classic (2400m) for stayers. Also on the card are the Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1300m), Group 3 Sandown Stakes (1500m), Group 3 Eclipse Stakes (1800m), Group 3 Summoned Stakes (1500m) and for the two milers the Sandown Cup (3200m) is another feature.

Run over a mile (1600m), the race offers $350,000 in total prize money to the three-year-olds in the field that face off under set weights and is usually the final spring run of the campaign for its contestants.

The next edition of the Sandown Guineas is set to run on Saturday November 12th, 2016.

The Sandown Guineas field attracts a line-up of strong middle-distance performing three-year-olds looking to secure a final Group race win for the spring.
Most gallopers come into the Sandown Guineas field off a run two weeks before on Victoria Derby Day at Flemington Racecourse in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m).
Recent winners of the Carbine Club Stakes – Sandown Guineas double include Mahuta (2015), Paximadia (2013) and Kidnapped (2009). The Carbine Club Stakes form of 2013 also held-up in the placings with the third placed Equator finishing second to Paximada in the Guineas, when it ran at Caulfield.

Another possible lead-up run is the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on Derby Day, a race the 2015 runner-up Dal Cielo (6th) came off. The most recent winner to come off a Coolmore Stud Stakes run was Pressday (11th) in 2013.

The 2014 winner Petrology also won his lead-up run at Flemington, while that year’s runner-up Stratum Star came off a Carbine Club Stakes second. Two years earlier in 2012 the Carbine Club Stakes winner Lunar Rise ran second to Tatra in the Sandown Guineas, Tatra turning the tables after a Carbine Club Stakes second.

The nominations are taken the Monday before the race runs on the Saturday with the final field and barrier draw released on the Wednesday.
