Ballarat Cup Tips

Ballarat Cup tips include looking for in-form spring milers or stayers coming off a win in a Melbourne lead-up race, graduates that finished in the money in their lead-up assignment and tipping single-figure fancies.

Plenty of higher-weighted runners have won the event in recent years including Junoob (60kg in 2015), Kiwia (57.5kg in 2018), Zayydani (57.5kg in 2021) and Berkeley Square (58kg in 2025) so looking for the in-form horses higher up the weights is a good Ballarat Cup betting tip.

The male runners also make a stronger Ballarat Cup tipping selection as Zayydani (2021) was the first mare to win since Battocchi (1997).

2025 Ballarat Cup Tips

Our Ladbrokes’ exclusive Ballarat Cup 2025 betting tips on the Listed race during the spring racing season will be detailed below the week of the race so, stay tuned for those to back and sack this season.

To Win: No. 2 Kingswood

KINGSWOOD (6) has crunched into Ballarat Cup favouritism and it’s easy to see why punters are siding with him.

Gavin Bedggood’s Roaring Lion entire heads to Ballarat for the first time but arrives with strong spring credentials, highlighted by his tough Listed Cup Day Plate win over 1800m at Flemington on November 4 where he dug deep to hold off Saint George.

He does rise slightly in weight to 59kg, yet with Johnny Allen sticking from a soft gate six draw, he should get every chance to roll forward and land in the right spot.

Fitness is no query despite the month between runs, and the step up in trip looks ideal given his solid record at the distance (4:2‑1‑1).

That Flemington black‑type success showed his grit, and with natural improvement fourth‑up, he shapes as the one to beat.

With the right run in transit, KINGSWOOD has all the makings of a Ballarat Cup winner and the punters’ pick looks set to deliver again.

Contested over 2000m, the Ballarat Cup is a Listed event run under handicap conditions and was first held in 1939.

The 2013 Ballarat Cup winner The Offer famously went on to win the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) over the two miles the following autumn.

Ballarat Cup Betting

Ballarat Cup betting has traditionally been led by in-form staying types coming off lead-up runs in similar or tougher grade races like the Group 1 Champions Mile (1600m) on Stakes Day at Flemington.

Bankers Choice (6th in 2022) was the Champions Mile graduate to back-up and win the Ballarat Cup.

There have been a number of notable upsets in recent years including in 2020 with Irish Flame winning at Ballarat Cup odds of $18.

Captain Envious ($3.70 in 2023) was the last Ballarat Cup favourite to win.

Ballarat Cup Field

The Ballarat Cup race field draws a quality line-up of spring staying types from both local and interstate stayers, although locally-trained Victorian gallopers usually dominate the line-up.

Runners may come via a number of different lead-up races including the Champions Stakes a fortnight earlier during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Following a run in the Ballarat Cup horses may back-up in the Listed $300,000 Pakenham Cup (2500m) with Pilote D’Essai (2016) the last to do the double.

Ballarat Cup nominations close the Monday of race week with final acceptances revealing the field released on the Wednesday before runs on the Saturday.

2025 Ballarat Cup Field

The official Ballarat Cup 2025 field of final acceptors is announced by the Ballarat Turf Club on the Wednesday of race week and will be published below along with the confirmed jockeys and barriers.

The Ballarat Cup 2025 final field features a quality line-up of summer staying types with an open market narrowly led by the rails-drawn Air Assault coming via a sixth when two lengths beaten in the Cranbourne Cup last month.

Ballarat Cup Form Guide

The Ballarat Cup form guide lists for punters all the crucial pre-betting information like the jockeys, trainers, barriers and lead-up runs of the female sprinters in the field.

Runners trained out of Melbourne stables have a strong recent record the race, so looking at the local gallopers instead of the visiting runners with a lead-up run at either Flemington or Caulfield is essential when doing the Ballarat Cup form.

The Ballarat Cup form has held-up in tougher races and has been worth following into the bigger autumn races the following year.

In 2022 the Ballarat Cup runner-up Atishu ran third next-up in Sydney’s The Ingham Stakes results before a big 2023 that included an autumn Group 1 Queen Of The Turf win at Randwick and success in Flemington’s Group 1 Champions Stakes (2000m) at Flemington over the Cup Carnival.

The 2024 Ballarat Cup third placegetter, Globe, went on to frank the form the following spring with a win in the 2025 Group 1 Might And Power at Caulfield.
