Blue Sapphire Stakes 2021

Wednesday October 13, 2021

Ladbrokes Tip: The Blue Sapphire Stakes serves as a potential lead-up to the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes

The Blue Sapphire Stakes is a 1200m sprint race for three-year-olds held at Caulfield Racecourse on a Wednesday in mid-October as part of Thousand Guineas Day.

The mid-week meeting runs the Wednesday before Caulfield Cup Day and was previously host to just three Group 3 races including the Ladies’ Day Vase and Coongy Cup for Caulfield Cup types as well as the Blue Sapphire Stakes.

In 2021 however the meeting grew in popularity with the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) moved from the Saturday prior to headline the action.

The Blue Sapphire Stakes was reduced in prize money in 2021 from $400,000 to $200,000.

A set weights showdown, the event serves as a potential lead-up to Flemington’s Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on Victoria Derby Day.

Flying Artie (2016) was the last horse to complete the Blue Sapphire Stakes – Coolmore Stud Stakes double.

The event was officially inaugurated in 2005 but was open only to juveniles before become a stable three-year-old’s feature in 2012 and ran on Caulfield Guineas Day before being moved to the following Wednesday the next year.

The Blue Sapphire Stakes has held Group 3 status since 2016.

This season the 2021 Blue Sapphire Stakes ran on Wednesday October 13, 2021 and saw Extreme Warrior win in runaway fashion by nearly four lengths.

  • To Win: #4 Port Louis ($9 at time of publish)

Going for value and the rails-drawn Port Louis from the Maher/Eustace stable. Still a maiden after six starts, but this well-bred Maurice colt has potential. Gets things his way from the alley and will muster early speed. Twice runner-up from two previous 1200m runs, Group 1 performed and should appreciate the roomer Caulfield track following a second at The Valley behind fellow Blue Sapphire runner Minsk Moment.
