Ladbrokes Tip: The Breeders’ Plate makes a nice lead-up into the $1 million Golden Gift race.
The Breeders’ Plate is a Group 3 race conducted at Royal Randwick Racecourse on Epsom Handicap Day each Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.
The meeting is traditionally held on either the final Saturday in September or first in October and is headlined by the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m). The Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) for Spring Cups-bound stayers and Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) for the fillies are the other elite level races on the card.
The Everest hopefuls are also on display in the Group 2 $1 million Premiere Stakes (1200m).
The Breeders’ Plate, previously a Listed race, gained its current Group 3 status in 2018 and currently offers $250,000 in prize money.
The 1000m, set weights sprint is open only to two-year-old colts and geldings.
The Breeders’ Plate, along with the Group 3 Gimcrack Stakes for the fillies held on the same day, are the first two-year-old races of the racing season in New South Wales.
Two-year-olds out of the Breeders’ Plate often head towards the $1 million Golden Gift later in the spring with Sejardan (2021) the last to do the double.
The latest edition of the Breeders’ Plate took place on Saturday September 30th, 2023 as part of Randwick’s Epsom Handicap Day card and saw million-dollar yearling Espionage ($7.50) post a narrow win on debut to lead an all-Waterhouse/Bott trifecta.

Mac is back and comes aboard here from a favourable barrier three draw. Can salute on debut.
