Callander-Presnell (Stan Fox Stakes) 2024

The Callander-Presnell now runs over a mile offering $1 million

The Callander-Presnell – formerly known as the Stan Fox Stakes – is a Group 2 race for three-year-olds run on Spring Champion Stakes Day at Royal Randwick in October each Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.

The meeting is headlined by the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) for three-year-old stayers, which is now worth an incredible $2 million in prize money.

The race day, which is held on the same date as Melbourne’s Cox Plate Day card at The Valley, also features a third seven-figure showdown in the form of the now Gorup 2 $2 million The Invitation (1400m) for fillies and mares.

Renamed the Callander-Presnell ahead of the 2022 edition in honour of Sydney racing media figures Ken Callander and Max Presnell, the race previously known as the Stan Fox Stakes is now worth $1 million.

Run at set weights over 1600m having been increased in distance from 1500m in 2022, the Callander-Presnell was previously held earlier in the carnival. It once served as a lead-up into the Golden Rose in Sydney or the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) in Melbourne.

Recent horses to complete the Stan Fox Stakes – Caulfield Guineas double include Press Statement (2015) and Shooting To Win (2014).

In 2022 Golden Mile completed the Caulfield Guineas – Callander-Presnell double.

An earlier change of date for the Stan Fox Stakes saw the race run on the same day as Melbourne’s Caulfield Guineas as a lead-up to Randwick’s now defunct $1 million Bondi Stakes (1600m) that took place from 2019-21.

During that time both Peltzer (2020) and Hilal (2021) completed the Stan Fox Stakes – Bondi Stakes double.

The $500,000 Tapp-Craig (1400m) run a fortnight earlier offers the first three placegetters a ballot exemption into the Callander-Presnell race.

The latest edition of the Callander-Presnell ran on Saturday October 26, 2024 on Spring Champion Stakes Day at Randwick and saw the progressive Snitzel colt Prost ($7.50) improve on a lead-up seventh in the Roman Consul over 1200m to relish the 1600m and salute in a narrow photo-thriller.

Callander-Presnell Betting

Callander-Presnell odds favour local Sydney gallopers coming off a good lead-up run in races like the Up And Coming Stakes also held at Royal Randwick the month before. Stan Fox Stakes / Callander-Presnell betting favourites have a strong recent record in the race and runners looking like they’ll see out a mile usually sit high up the bookies’ markets.

If there’s an odds-on favourite, they usually get the job done for the punters. There have been notable upsets however including in 2019 with $20 roughie Colada winning.

In 2020 Peltzer ($2.70) became the latest Stan Fox Stakes favourite to salute before the race was renamed and re-vamped ahead of the 2022 edition and subsequently won by the Callander-Presnell favourite Golden Mile ($2.30 in 2022).

There was a big upset in 2023 with Chrysaor saluting at Callander-Presnell odds of $26.

Callander-Presnell Field

The Stan Fox Stakes field – now known as the Callander-Presnell race field – attracts a line-up of the season’s best middle-distance three-year-olds looking to extend their form over the mile for $1 million in prize money.

In 2015 Press Statement improved on a Golden Rose fifth to win the Stan Fox and then the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas over the mile in Victoria next run. That year’s Stan Fox runner-up Shards also came out of the Golden Rose (7th) as did the third-placed Rageese (4th).

The previous year (2014), Shooting To Win ran third in the Golden Rose before also completing the Stan Fox Stakes – Caulfield Guineas double. That year’s Golden Rose Stakes runner-up Scissor Kick also ran second in the Stan Fox Stakes.

Manawanui won the Golden Rose Stakes – Stan Fox Stakes double in 2011 before a second in the Caulfield Guineas top Helmet. The Golden Rose – Stan Fox double was also achieved in 2009 by Denman.

More recently the 2020 Stan Fox Stakes winner Peltzer also franked that year’s Golden Rose form improving on his lead-up fifth in the Group 1 before winning the now defunct $1 million Bondi Stakes next-up.

The 2021 Stan Fox Stakes winner was also a Golden Rose graduate with Hilal improving on a lead-up 11th in the Group 1 before also taking out the final edition of the Bondi Stakes.

The Callander-Presnell now runs later in the carnival on the same day Melbourne hosts the Ladbrokes Cox Plate, replacing the Bondi Stakes as Sydney’s premier three-year-olds race of the spring.

2024 Callander-Presnell Tips

Our Ladbrokes’ insider Callander-Presnell 2024 tips and betting selections on the renamed Stan Fox Stakes race will be detailed below outlining the gallopers to back and sack in the spring event.

  • To Win: #1 Anode ($2.60 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Select field in the lucrative Group 2 Callander-Presnell and Anode looks the deserving favourite every hope of back-to-back glory following the Waterhouse/Bott-trained colt’s lead-up victory in the Tapp-Craig at Rosehill. The son of I Am Invincible was second fresh to Traffic Warden – who would have given them a shake-up in The Everest had he not been scratched at the gates – in the Run To The Rose. Was somewhat disappointing behind Broadsiding in the Group 1 Golden Rose after that when 8th of 10 runners, but seemed not to like the Soft going. He is fit with confidence now drawn barrier six for Timmy Clark and will appreciate firmer going again here.

Callander-Presnell Form Guide

The Callander-Presnell form guide features all the need-to-know information on the race that has now replaced the Bondi Stakes like the jockeys and trainers of all the runners, as well as their barrier draw and lead-up form.

The best form line to follow into the race was that coming out of the Golden Rose Stakes, which had produced more winners of the Group 2 than any other race before the Stan Fox Stakes (now the Callander-Presnell) moved date.

The Stan Fox Stakes form once stacked up in better spring features including the Caulfield Guineas, a popular interstate betting double during the carnival season, before being moved to the same date as that Group 1 mile feature in Melbourne. In 2013 Criterion ran second in both the Stan Fox and Spring Champion before a fourth in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
