The Cockram Stakes – officially the W.W. Cockram Stakes is a Group 3 race for mares held at Caulfield Racecourse in late August annually on Memsie Stakes Day.
The day is the opening Group 1 meeting of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival and also features the Group 1 Memsie Stakes, Group 3 H.D.F. McNeil Stakes and the Group 3 The Heath 1100 for potential The Everest horses.
Now offering $200,000 in prize money, the Cockram Stakes was first run in 1992 and the 1200m sprint race is contested at set weights plus penalties.
Many quality female gallopers have won the Cockram Stakes over the years including: Mid Summer Music (2011); Pippie (2019) who went on to win the following year’s Group 1 Oakleigh Plate – Moir Stakes double; Perfect Jewel (2020); and Probabeel (2021) who was a three-time Group 1 winner at the time of her victory and who went on to win another elite level in that year’s Caulfield Stakes.
The next edition of the Cockram Stakes takes place on Memsie Stakes Day, Saturday August 27th, 2022.

Cockram Stakes Betting
Cockram Stakes betting is led by quality mares kicking off their spring campaigns that have a strong first-up record. Any proven Group performers, especially past Group 1 runners down in grade, sit high up the markets as do those mares with a good Caulfield track record.
Pippie ($2.05 in 2019) followed by Probabeel ($1.95 in 2021) are the latest favourites in the Cockram Stakes odds to salute for the punters.

Cockram Stakes Field
The Cockram Stakes field attracts a quality line-up of mares, many of which may be having their first start as four-year-olds on the back of their final campaigns as fillies in the autumn / winter.
The best mares out of the Cockram Stakes field will continue on to target tougher races over the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival including Flemington’s Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m). The Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) at The Valley in late September is also a popular target for Cockram Stakes runners, although no mare has done the double. The 2020 Cockram Stakes winner Perfect Jewel came close however, running second in the Stocks Stakes results that year.
The Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m) run at Caulfield in September is another good next-up option for Cockram Stakes graduates and Savanna Amour (2017) was the last mare to do the double.
