Ladbrokes Cox Plate history was made with the 2024 Cox Plate results seeing Chris Waller’s Turnbull Stakes winning mare Via Sistina ($5) put her Tuesday morning mishap firmly behind her with an emphatic eight-length victory few predicted!
She made her move at the top of the short straight taking control at the 300m and racing off for an enormous victory in a new record time of 2 minutes 01.07 seconds. James McDonald celebrated his 100th Group 1 winning ride in style when securing his third straight Cox Plate on three separate horses.
The Japanese raider Prognosis ran second and the James Cummings-trained colt Broadsiding third.
Australasia’s weight-for-age championship the Ladbrokes Cox Plate is known as “the race where legends are made” and each year attracts the best WFA horses from both Australia and overseas. Run at the notoriously tight Moonee Valley circuit in Melbourne each spring, the 2040m classic is now worth $5 million in prize money and has been run since 1922 when Violoncello won.

Named in honour of W.S. Cox who founded the Melbourne Racing Club, the Cox Plate has been won by many turf champions over the years including racing legend Phar Lap (1930-31), New Zealand hero Rising Fast (1954) who also won that year’s Melbourne and Caulfield Cups, and triple Melbourne Cup winning mare Makybe Diva (2005).
The brilliant mare Winx is one of the most famous Cox Plate winners in history. In October of 2018 she successfully defended her three titles, overtaking Kingston Town (1980-82) as the only four-time Cox Plate champion.
Chris Waller won his fifth Cox Plate in 2024 with another champion mare, Via Sistina, who won in a new race record time by an incredible eight lengths to continue her trainer’s legacy in Australia’s greatest race.
On the same day as Melbourne’s Cox Plate Day, Sydney hosts the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) and $2 million The Invitation race.
The latest edition of the Ladbrokes Cox Plate ran on Saturday, October 26, 2024 at Moonee Valley Racecourse offering $5 million in total prize money and was won in an eight-length demolition job by the Chris Waller-trained mare Via Sistina ($5) who was ridden by the now 100-time Group 1 winning jockey James McDonald.

Ladbrokes Cox Plate Betting
Early Cox Plate betting opens during the winter months before the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival even kicks off and features a list of all-in prices on possible runners. While there is good value on offer in these futures markets many punters prefer to wait until a few days out when the confirmed field is released.
Upsets are not uncommon in the Cox Plate and since 2000 when Sunline (11/8F) saluted for the first of her two victories 10 other favourites have won the race, boosted by the four-peat of Winx (2015-18), and most recently the Japanese raider Lys Gracieux ($2.50 2019) followed by Anamoe ($2.40 in 2022) and Hong Kong raider Romantic Warrior ($3.60 in 2023).
Winx was the first three-time defending Cox Plate winner to jump favourite in her forth attempt, which she also won for the punters making the Cox Plate history books.
In the 2021 Cox Plate results, State Of Rest ($7.50) was eventually confirmed the winner denying equal favourites Anamoe and Verry Elleegant who ran second and third at $3.60 each.
Anamoe atoned in 2022 saluting as the $2.40 Cox Plate favourite 12 months after his close defeat the year before.
In 2024 Via Sistina won the Cox Plate by eight lengths at $5 in betting.
Ladbrokes Cox Plate Tips
Cox Plate tips flood in during October every year and usually the pro punters and tipsters put three and four-year-olds on top of their selections as this age group won every Cox Plate from 2009 – 2015, the weight-for-age conditions suiting the younger horses.
Tipping a Cox Plate winner also involves looking at the lead-up form with gallopers coming off a top three run the best performed in this spring classic.
A key lead-up races into the Cox Plate is the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington earlier in the month with Winx (2017 and 2018) completing the Turnbull Stakes – Cox Plate double twice in recent history.
Via Sistina (2024) was the last to complete the Turnbull Stakes – Cox Plate double when winning the latter by eight lengths.
2024 Cox Plate Tips
Our exclusive Ladbrokes Cox Plate 2024 betting tips will be detailed in full below the week of the race so stay tuned to see the horses to back and sack in your exotic Cox Plate selections this season.
To Win: #6 Pride Of Jenni ($5 at time of publish)
Sticking with a form mare who looks excellent on the quick back-up despite her loss in Sydney last weekend as the beaten favourite behind Ceolwulf in the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes (1600m).
A front runner leading all the way in a Cox Plate? She has certainly proved she can do it before when running her rivals ragged at Randwick to claim the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth over this distance by a powerhouse 6.5 lengths.
That was a huge effort and she’s been excellent in all her runs since even if she’s not unbeaten this prep.
Lys Gracieux (2019) was the last Cox Plate winning mare and Pride Of Jenni ticks plenty of boxes in her bid to be the next in the Australasian weight-for-age championship.
Barrier seven is okay for Declan Bates to get her into the front-running position she’s tipped to take and she’s proven at The Valley track having beaten Mr Brightside here two back by 1.5 lengths over the mile in the Feehan.
Like her on the quick back-up, she lost few admirers last weekend and will appreciate being back in Melbourne.
Pressure and pace are on and so is this mare!
Back up in trip is another tick and she’ll get conditions to suit.
The Danger: #2 Prognosis ($3.80 at time of publish)
Jockey Damian Lane (pictured on Veight) rides the Japanese raider Prognosis in Saturday’s Cox Plate 2024 field. Photo: Ultimate Racing Photos.
You cannot bet on the Ladbrokes Cox Plate this year and leave the visiting Japanese galloper Prognosis out.
This horse rates perfectly to go back-to-back for the internationals following the Romantic Warrior victory for Hong Kong last year and Japan already have a Cox Plate trophy from Lys Gracieux in 2019.
Damian Lane partners the talented and well-rated galloper and he was the very hoop that got the job done for Japan back in 2019.
A well-bred Deep impact stallion, Prognosis brings in great international form lines including running second to last year’s Cox Plate champion in a Group 1 back in April narrowly denied.
He’ll gets options from gate five and his 2000m record is undeniable (11:5-2-1).
His first-up record is imposing, and he’ll be flying fresh down under.
May not have a Group 1 on the CV yet but that takes nothing away from his class and what he’s been doing at the top level overseas.
Track whispers are that he’ll love the tight turns here too.
Pace will suit. Huge danger.
Each Way: #8 Broadsiding ($6 at time of publish)
Three-time Group 1 winning three-year-old Broadsiding could be a danger to the older runners at WFA this weekend. Photo: Steve Hart.
Broadsiding has been near the top of Cox Plate betting markets all spring and continues to deserve a spot in all the Cox Plate best bets.
This talented James Cummings-trained colt is by the sire of the moment, Too Darn Hot, and is third-up and fit now.
It has been over a decade since the three-year-olds finished on top of the Cox Plate results with Shamus Award (2013) the last but the Godolphin team have a big chance with this exciting youngster who already has a trio of Group 1 wins in the bag.
He won the Group 1 Golden Rose fresh over Traffic Warden who, if he hadn’t been scratched in the final seconds pre-race, would have been a genuine The Everest winning hope last weeked.
Last seen running fourth in the Caulfield Guineas fourth as the beaten odds-on favourite but that run wasn’t without merit as he suffered interference.
Needs to run out the 2040m but with 49.5kg he’s given every chance. Anamoe lost it in a photo as a 3YO before winning the next and this horse looks a similar type.
The Roughie: #1 Mr Brightside ($8.50 at time of publish)
Mr Brightside is at good odds to win the Cox Plate at his third attempt on the weekend. Photo: Ultimate Racing Photos.
Calling Mr B a race roughie is crazy considering what this incredible seven-time winner from the Hayes’ boys has achieved.
In his past 18 starts this ultra-consistent son of Bullbars has missed out on a spot in the trifecta just once (Australian Cup 5th).
He continues to show his form as a seven-year-old this prep with a Memsie second, win in the Makybe Diva in the mud, Feehan placing behind Pride Of Jenni, and the last start second to all-the-way winner Deny Knowledge in the Group 1 Might And Power (2000m) at Caulfield.
One of the best Moonee Valley performers in the race (6:3-2-0) and lines-up in a Cox Plate field for the third year running.
Connections were narrowly denied the silverware with the close second 12 months ago and the horse is going as good now.
Gets thing his way from barrier two with big race specialist Craig Williams aboard.
A gear change has him donning winkers now so he’ll be focused and ready for the challenge.
Has been outstanding in his lead-up trackwork.
Now or never Mr B!
