The George Ryder Stakes is one of a bumper five Group 1 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival races taking place at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in March on Golden Slipper Stakes Day.

Racing at the meeting is top-level and highlighted by the two-year-olds facing off in the Group 1 $5 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m).

Contested over 1500m by the season’s best sprinter – milers, the George Ryder Stakes is one of the key support races on the card and is a weight-for-age contest for horses aged three-years-old and above.

The winner of the Canterbury Stakes run at Randwick a fortnight before is exempt from ballot in the George Ryder Stakes and many runners back up in the  Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) during Sydney’s The Championships in April.

Forbidden Love was the last runner to complete the Canterbury Stakes – George Ryder Stakes double.

In 2024 Lady Laguna won the Canterbury Stakes before her brave second in the George Ryder Stakes results.

The last horse to complete the George Ryder Stakes – Doncaster Mile double was Winx (2016). Winx also returned in 2017 to go back-to-back in the George Ryder Stakes results posting her sixteenth win on the trot.

In 2018 Winx secured her 24th straight victory, world record 17th Group 1 flat race victory and an historical third George Ryder Stakes win. She didn’t stop there, the superstar making history with four consecutive George Ryder Stakes victories in 2019, her penultimate career start.

In 2026, another outstanding Chris Waller-trained mare Autumn Glow won extended the undefeated start to her career up to 11/11.

George Ryder Stakes Betting

The George Ryder Stakes betting markets are usually led by those horses coming off top three or four runs in Group 1 company in Sydney over 1400m – 1600m.

From 2006 – 2026 nine George Ryder Stakes favourites saluted for the punters with the latest being champion mare Winx for her four consecutive victories (2016-19), Forbidden Love ($2.40 in 2022), Godolphin gun Anamoe ($1.80 in 2023) and Chris Waller’s undefeated mare Autumn Glow ($1.28 in 2026) who made it 11/11.

Sydney’s premier trainer over the past decade Chris Waller has dominated the George Ryder Stakes with three straight winners from 2010 – 2012 before the four straight wins with Winx (2016-19); his gallopers always feature highly in the George Ryder Stakes odds. Waller won again in 2026 with Autumn Glow.

In 2020, Dreamforce (Chipping Norton Stakes eighth) became the first George Ryder Stakes winner since Referral (1999) to come off a lead-up run worse than fourth, so those dominating the markets are the in-form, proven weight-for-age types with form over the distance.

Dreamforce returned to run an eye-catching second in the 2021 George Ryder Stakes results behind the upset winner Think It Over.

George Ryder Stakes Field

The George Ryder Stakes race field attracted a dozen or more final acceptances every year from 2009 – 2015. For the 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 editions the mighty mare Winx scared off a number of horses leading to below capacity editions of the event.

There was also a small George Ryder Stakes field of nine in 2020 for the start of the post-Winx era, while in 2021 Think It Over beat home 12 rivals.

In 2022 Forbidden Love beat home eight rivals in the George Ryder field, while Anamoe was too good for his rivals in an eleven-starter George Ryder field in 2023.

In 2024 three-year-old champ Veight beat a bumper 17 rivals in an 18-horse George Ryder Stakes field.

In 2025 Gringotts beat home 10 rivals.

In 2026 Autumn Glow defeated 11 rivals.

Horses come into the George Ryder Stakes field via many different lead-up races with the 2014 and 2015 winners Gordon Lord Byron and Real Impact coming off international runs.

The traditional lead-up however is the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) run over 200m shorter at Randwick two weeks before.

The Canterbury Stakes produced three winners from 2011 – 2022 with the Chris Waller-trained duo Rangirangdoo (4th in 2011), Metal Bender (3rd in 2012) and Forbidden Love (1st in 2022) who was the latest to do the double.

In 2020 the Canterbury Stakes winner The Bostonian ran second next-up in the George Ryder Stakes results.

From 2016-19, Winx completed the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) – George Ryder Stakes double four times on the trot. In 2020 the star Kiwi Te Akau Shark jumped odds-on favourite in the George Ryder after winning the Chipping Norton Stakes but only managed to run third.

Anamoe (2023) was the last horse to do the Chipping Norton – George Ryder Stakes double before Autumn Glow (2026) who did the renamed Verry Elleegant Stakes – George Ryder double.

Earlier, the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) at Randwick on Chipping Norton Stakes Day makes a nice lead-up into the George Ryder Stakes and Think It Over (2021) was the last horse to do the Liverpool City Cup – George Ryder Stakes double.

Gringotts (3rd in 2025) was the last Liverpool City Cup graduate to continue on and win the George Ryder Stakes.

The 2024 George Ryder winner Veight came via a lead-up second at Flemington in Melbourne’s Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m).

George Ryder Stakes nominations close the Monday before the race before the final field and barrier draw is announced on the Wednesday.

George Ryder Stakes Form Guide

Displaying all the information punters need, the George Ryder Stakes form guide is the best place to look before placing a bet on the weight-for-age clash.

Recent George Ryder Stakes form – until Winx saluted for the punters in 2016-19 – reveals the poor record of favourites and the notable fact that many of the race’s winners dropped back in distance from their lead-up run.

Looking for horses that ran top four last start is a key George Ryder Stakes form indicator.

Fillies and mares also had a poor record against the colts, geldings and stallions in the George Ryder Stakes with no female galloper having won since Heat Of The Moment won in her three-year-old season back in 1986 until Winx (2016-19) broke the drought 30 years later.

Forbidden Love (2022) saw the mares back in winning form again, while Anamoe ($1.80 in 2023) became the latest George Ryder Stakes favourite to win the following year.

Mares were on top again in 2026 with Autumn Glow who was the last favourite ($1.28) to win.

Another thing to keep an eye on in the George Ryder Stakes form guide is the barriers with just two winners in the past 15 years having jumped from a double-digit gate when Real Impact won from 12 of 14 in 2015 and Anamoe saluted from 11 of 11 in 2023.

Anamoe franked the George Ryder Stakes form with a next-up third in the Group 1 $5 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes results.

The 2025 George Ryder proved a serious form race. Winner Gringotts came back in the spring and pulled off The Big DanceThe Gong double for the second straight year, while runner‑up Fangirl franked the form immediately by taking out the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf at her next start. Third placegetter Ceolwulf kept the trend rolling, returning in the spring to claim the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes – Champions Mile double across two states.

George Ryder Stakes Form Facts

  • Winx (2016, 2017, 2018 & 2019) followed by Forbidden Love (2022) and Autumn Glow (2026) are the only George Ryder Stakes winning mares since 1986.
