In 2020, Dreamforce (Chipping Norton Stakes eighth) became the first George Ryder Stakes winner since Referral (1999) to come off a lead-up run worse than fourth, so those dominating the markets are the in-form, proven weight-for-age types with form over the distance.

George Ryder Stakes Field
The George Ryder Stakes race field attracted a dozen or more final acceptances every year from 2009 – 2015. For the 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 editions the mighty mare Winx scared off a number of horses leading to below capacity editions of the event.
There was also a small George Ryder Stakes field of nine in 2020 for the start of the post-Winx era, while in 2021 Think It Over beat home 12 rivals.
In 2022 Forbidden Love beat home eight rivals in the George Ryder field, while Anamoe was too good for his rivals in an eleven-starter George Ryder field in 2023.

The Canterbury Stakes produced three winners from 2011 – 2022 with the Chris Waller-trained duo Rangirangdoo (4th in 2011), Metal Bender (3rd in 2012) and Forbidden Love (1st in 2022) who was the latest to do the double.
In 2020 the Canterbury Stakes winner The Bostonian ran second next-up in the George Ryder Stakes results.
From 2016-19, Winx completed the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) – George Ryder Stakes double four times on the trot. In 2020 the star Kiwi Te Akau Shark jumped odds-on favourite in the George Ryder after winning the Chipping Norton Stakes, but only managed to run third.

George Ryder Stakes Tips
Gallopers with proven Group 1 form around the distance are the top George Ryder Stakes tips. The favourites – up until the dominance of Winx (2016-19) – had a poor record in recent years and favourite proved a George Ryder Stakes betting tip.
Look for value in the markets by backing a runner who ran in the top three in Group 1 company last time out and that is proven in weight-for-age company.
2024 George Ryder Stakes Tips
Our Ladbrokes’ insider George Ryder Stakes 2024 betting tips will be detailed below the week of the race so stay tuned for the autumn gallopers to back and sack in the weight-for-age feature this season.
- To Win: #15 Lady Laguna ($9.50 at time of publish) – BET NOW
Big field and an Everest winner who is favourite, but at the price Lady Laguna looks to be going too good to ignore as a last start Group 1 champ in Sydney with more to give. The ultra-consistent Annabel Neasham-trained four-year-old Overshare mare has won four of her past five starts and comes off an impressive 1.25 length upset over Think About It at Randwick in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m). Looking to beat him home again, she’s got a strong Rosehill record (4:2-1-0) and is drawn better than the top elect. Same weight and hoop as last time out, just needs to extend over the extra furlong. Think she can win again. Value.
George Ryder Stakes Form Guide
Displaying all the information punters need, the George Ryder Stakes form guide is the best place to look before placing a bet on the weight-for-age clash.
Recent George Ryder Stakes form – until Winx saluted for the punters in 2016-19 – reveals the poor record of favourites and the notable fact that many of the race’s winners dropped back in distance from their lead-up run.

Forbidden Love (2022) saw the mares back in winning form again, while Anamoe ($1.80 in 2023) became the latest George Ryder Stakes favourite to win the following year.
Another thing to keep an eye on in the George Ryder Stakes form guide is the barriers with just two winners in the past 15 years having jumped from a double digit gate when Real Impact won from 12 of 14 in 2015 and Anamoe saluted from 11 of 11 in 2023.
Anamoe franked the George Ryder Stakes form with a next-up third in the Group 1 $5 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes results.
