Ladbrokes Tip: Golden Pendant graduates can head to Group 1 Melbourne races later in the spring
The Golden Pendant is a Group 2 race for fillies and mares held at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in late September during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival. The race was formerly known as the Research Stakes and is run over 1400m on the same day as the season’s gun three-year-olds face off in the Group 1 $1 million Golden Rose Stakes (1400m).

The Golden Pendant is one of the key support events on the Golden Rose Day card along with the Group 2 Shannon Stakes and the Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality for stayers.
The event offers a lucrative $400,000 in total prize money and is run at set weights plus penalties. It has been won by some quality mares over the years including eight-time Group 1 champion More Joyous (2012).
The Golden Pendant now also serves as a potential lead-up for mares looking for an invite to contest the $2 million The Invitation race at Randwick in October.
In 2022 the Golden Pendant winner Nimalee went on to run third in that year’s The Invitation results.
Espiona (2023) is the last mare to complete the Golden Pendant – The Invitation race double.
The latest edition of the Golden Pendant took place on Saturday September 28, 2024 as part of Golden Rose Day at Rosehill and was won in a strong finish by the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Snitzel four-year-old Makarena ($4.60).

- 1st: #6 Makarena
- 2nd: #2 Amelia’s Jewel
- 3rd: #7 Arctic Glamour
The Team Hawkes-trained Makarena ($4.60) was strong second-up off a fourth in the Sheraco Stakes improving to end her recent run of minor placings with a well-earned victory over Amelia’s Jewel and Arctic Glamour who tried hard but couldn’t run down the winner in this year’s Golden Pendant 2024 results.

Golden Pendant Betting
Golden Pendant betting markets are led by the class mares in the race each year, usually local Sydney runners with good form at the track and distance.
Looking further down the Golden Pendant betting markets has proved profitable a few times in recent years including in 2013 when Sharnee Rose scored a $31 upset. Another longer-priced hopeful in Golden Pendant odds to salute was Peeping ($15 in 2015).
Espiona ($2.35 in 2023) was the last favourite in Golden Pendant betting to salute.
Golden Pendant Field
The Golden Pendant field attracts a strong class of fillies and mares each season, but usually not the top of the crop of female gallopers.
Runners in the Golden Pendant field may come off earlier Sydney Spring Carnival runs in a race like the now Group 2 Sheraco Stakes (1200m).
Mizzy (2019) completed the Sheraco Stakes – Golden Pendant double, also saluting in the Toy Show Quality in between, while in 2020 Subpoenaed improved on a lead-up Sheraco Stakes sixth to win the Golden Pendant. In 2021 the Golden Pendant winner Vangelic came off a Sheraco fourth in the lead-up.
Espiona (2nd in 2023) and Makarena (4th in 2024) are the latest Sheraco Stakes graduates to win the Golden Pendant.
Golden Pendant nominations close the Monday before the race runs on the Saturday with the field and barrier draw out on the Wednesday.
2024 Golden Pendant Field

Golden Pendant Tips
Good Golden Pendant tips include checking for mares that ran top three in Sydney in their last start, have previous Group 2 or 3 form in similar company and that have strong records over at least 1400m in distance.
Local runners have a strong record in the race as do the older runners as opposed to the fillies, so backing Sydney-trained mares is also a nice Golden Pendant betting tips.
2024 Golden Pendant Tips
Our Ladbrokes’ insider Golden Pendant 2024 betting tips and exotic Rosehill racing selections on the Group 2 will be detailed below a few days out from the race so stay tuned for the female gallopers to get behind in the $400,000 event this season.
- To Win: #2 Amelia’s Jewel ($2.90 at time of publish) – BET NOW
Tight market for the Golden Pendant but happy to tip a return to winning form for former WA-based Group 1 winning mare Amelia’s Jewel who looks well positioned here. The five-year-old is now with Annabel Neasham and Rob Archibald and has her second run for her new stable. Fresh was eye-catching in the Group 2 Tramway when second to Royal Patronage who franked the form with a third in last weekend’s $1 million 7 Stakes. Amelia’s Jewel now faces a small field from a good gate over a suitable distance (3:1-2-0) and has the class to beat these rivals fitter now for her last start.
Golden Pendant Form Guide
The Golden Pendant form guide details all the key information of the race and its runners like lead-up form, barriers, jockeys and trainers.
Over the years the Golden Pendant form has stacked up in better races quite a few times even in Melbourne’s Group 1 VRC Oaks (2500m). Catkins ran second in the 2014 Golden Pendant and third in the Myer Classic that year. In 2013 the Golden Pendant winner Sharnee Rose finished fourth in Crown Oaks, won by that season’s Golden Pendant runner-up Red Tracer.
Keeping an eye on the Golden Pendant form guide for mares coming out of the Sheraco Stakes is also important when tipping in the race.
The 2021 Golden Pendant form was franked with the winning mare Vangelic, later finishing third in that season’s Golden Eagle trifecta, while the runner-up Nimalee backed-up in the autumn the next year to take out the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes.
In 2022 the Golden Pendant runner-up Palaisipan went on to frank the form the following winter in Brisbane winning the 2023 Group 1 Tatt’s Tiara.
