JRA Plate 2024

Ladbrokes Tip: The JRA Plate serves as a nice lead-up into the higher grade races of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

The JRA Plate – officially the Japan Racing Association Plate – is a Group 3 race held over 2000m under quality handicap conditions each April during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

Conducted at Royal Randwick on All Aged Stakes Day, the event offers $250,000 as of 2024 and is open to horses aged three-years-old and above.

First held in 1997 the JRA Plate gained Group 3 status in 2014 and the race’s most famous winner is Viewed who went on to take out that year’s Melbourne Cup.

The other standout Japan Racing Association Plate winner was is Tie The Knot who won on the back of a lead-up Group 1 Tancred Stakes (2400m) victory before claiming the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) over the two miles just five days later.

The JRA Plate is now held the week after the Sydney Cup.

The race takes place as a key support act at the meeting headlined by the Group 1 $1,500,000 All Aged Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 $600,000 Champagne Stakes (1600m).

It serves as a good lead-up into the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival features including the Group 2 $1.2 million The Q22 (2200m).

In 2021 the JRA Plate form was franked with the winner Paths Of Glory going on to run third to Zaaki in that winter’s The Q22 results. Zaaki was officially second past the post in the JRA Plate that season, but was later disqualified.

The latest edition of the JRA Plate ran at Royal Randwick on Saturday April 20, 2024 as part of All Aged Stakes Day in Sydney and was won in dominant fashion by the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained dual Doomben Cup champ Huetor ($15) in an impressive upset.

JRA Plate Betting

JRA Plate betting markets are led by in-form autumn gallopers coming off strong performances in similar grade events in Sydney.

Any graduates out of tougher events over more distance dropping in grade – including the Group 2 Chairman’s Quality (2600m) – are well-backed in the JRA Plate odds. In 2021 the JRA Plate winner Paths Of Glory improved on a lead-up third in the Chairman’s Quality to win.

While runners under double-figures in JRA Plate betting have a strong strike-rate, there were notable upsets in 2019 with Grey Lion saluting at 40/1 and 2018 with Tally at 25/1!

There was another upset in 2024 with multiple Group 1 champ Huetor returning to form at $15 JRA Plate odds.

JRA Plate Field

Horses in the JRA Plate race field may come via a host of different lead-up races including even the Group 2 Chairman’s Quality (2600m) of for the mares the Group 3 Epona Stakes (1900m) the previous month at Rosehill is a good lead-up.

In 2021 Epona Stakes winner Polly Grey went on to run third in that year’s JRA Plate trifecta.

The Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m) is the other key lead-up into the JRA Plate field producing a host of recent winners including Tally (5th in 2018) and Life Less Ordinary (6th in 2020).

The 2021 JRA Plate third place-getter Polly Grey returned to improve on her lead-up second in the Neville Sellwood Stakes to win the 2022 JRA Plate.

The better runners out of the JRA Plate field may head to Brisbane next-up for races like the Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2400m) and or the Group 2 $1.2 million The Q22 (2200m).

In 2021 Zaaki was second in the JRA Plate (later disqualified) before a standout winter in Queensland that included victories in the Group 2 AD Hollindale Stakes (1800m), Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) and The Q22.

Alternatively if they stay around Sydney, the Listed Gosford Cup (2100m) is a good target and in 2021 JRA Plate third placed mare Polly Grey won that race next start.

JRA Plate nominations close on the Monday before the race with final acceptances taken on the Wednesday.

  • To Win: #12 Fawkner Park ($4.80 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Sticking with the Annabel Neasham-trained Fawkner Park to make it two on the trot following the Zoffany five-year-old’s lead-up Albury Cup triumph. He stormed home over this distance that day to defeat Regal Lion by over three lengths in impressive fashion. Yet to finish in the money in Randwick but has been thereabouts in his career in tougher grade races, loves the 2000m (5:3-0-0), is drawn a treat in gate three, and is down 3kg off his last run to just 53.5kg. Rain-affected track is the query, but going well enough to back with some confidence.

JRA Plate Form Guide

The JRA Plate form guide is a must to look over before betting as it gives punters all the essential information like the jockeys, trainers and barriers of the gallopers in the field.

The JRA Plate form has gone on to hold up in tougher grader races many times over the years including in 2008 with the winner Viewed saluting in that spring’s iconic Melbourne Cup race.

In 2021 the original JRA Plate runner-up before disqualification – Zaaki – franked the form winning his next three runs in Queensland including the Doomben Cup. He returned that spring to win three of his four starts including the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) and the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) – the latter a consolation prize after being sensationally scratched from that year’s Cox Plate on race day morning.

In 2022 the JRA Plate winner Polly Grey also headed to Queensland and ran a next-up second to Zaaki in the Group 2 A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m).

The 2022 JRA Plate form was further franked with the runner-up Numerian going on to win both the Listed Gosford Cup (2080m) as well as the Brisbane’s The Q22. Numerian was also back in the autumn of 2023 racing at elite level to finish runner-up behind Cascadian in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington.

The 2022 JRA Plate third-placed mare Icebath meanwhile went on to place second to Anamoe in that September’s Group 2 George Main Stakes (1600m) and win the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) at Flemington that spring.

The JRA Plate form from 2023 was franked when Huetor improved on his third to take out that winter’s Group 1 Doomben Cup race.
