Ladbrokes Tip: The Magic Night Stakes has been a good guide to the ATC Inglis’ Sires Produce Stakes in recent years.
The Magic Night Stakes is a Group 3 lead-up race into the iconic Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) and runs at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on Coolmore Classic Day each Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

The meeting is headlined by the fillies and mares facing off in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m), while the Magic Night Stakes is one of a host of Group status support acts on the card. Held the week prior to the Golden Slipper Stakes the set weights event is open only to two-year-old fillies and is contested over 1200m sprint distance.
The Magic Night Stakes offers a ballot exemption to the winner for the Golden Slipper Stakes and offers a total of $250,000 in prize money, including $140,000 for the successful connections.
In 2019 the filly Kiamichi became the first two-year-old to complete the Magic Night Stakes – Golden Slipper Stakes double since Bint Marscay back in 1993 based on the difficulty for juveniles backing up on successive Saturdays. Prior to Kiamichi, the last Golden Slipper Stakes winner to come off a lead-up in the Magic Night Stakes was Calaway Gal (2nd in 2002).
The latest edition of the Magic Night Stakes took place on Saturday March 16, 2024 at Rosehill Gardens with the progressive and well-backed Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Drifting ($4.20) earning a ballot exemption for the next weekend’s Golden Slipper field.

Favourites have a fair record in the race that has been dominated by single figure hopes in recent years with Kiamichi ($21 in 2019) the first double-figure Magic Night Stakes winner since Indian Ocean ($12 in 2009). Upsets continued in 2020 however with Thermosphere ($19 in 2020), a stablemate of Kiamichi.

Magic Night Stakes Field
The Magic Night Stakes race field attracts a line-up of promising two-year-old fillies, many eyeing an eleventh hour shot at making the Golden Slipper Stakes field the following Saturday.
Fillies often come into the race via runs in earlier autumn events for their kind including the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) or the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m). The best performing fillies out of the Magic Night Stakes field often back-up into the Golden Slipper Stakes.
She’s Extreme (2nd in 2022) was the last Magic Night Stakes winner to come off a lead-up run in the Sweet Embrace Stakes.
In 2014 Bring Me The Maid won the Group 2 and finished a brave third in the Golden Slipper Stakes the following weekend behind Mossfun. A few years later the 2017 Magic Night winner Tulip also finished third next-up in the Golden Slipper trifecta, as did Sunlight in 2018. In 2019 Kiamichi scored an upset win in the Magic Night Stakes before going on to win the Golden Slipper, the first to do the double since 1993.
Other recent Magic Night Stakes winners to place in the Golden Slipper Stakes include Portillo (3rd in 2008) and Media (3rd in 2005).
In 2023 Steel City won the Magic Night Stakes back in Sydney off an unplaced run in Melbourne’s Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m).
Magic Night Stakes nominations close the Monday before the race with the final field and barriers out on the Wednesday.

Magic Night Stakes Tips
Looking for fillies with winning lead-up form in similar class, those proven over 1200m and Group race graduates in lead-up Sydney races for fillies are key Magic Night Stakes tips.
Any fillies from the Godolphin stable also make a nice Magic Night Stakes tip with trainer James Cummings preparing three straight winners from 2019-2021.
Backing runners under $10 for the win is another good Magic Night Stakes betting tip as double figure hopes have a poor recent record in the race.
2024 Magic Night Stakes Tips
Our Ladbrokes’ insider Magic Night Stakes 2024 betting tips and exotic Group 3 racing selections will be detailed below soon after the field is out so stay tuned for the fillies to get behind in the Coolmore Classic Day race this autumn.
- To Win: #3 Fly Fly ($4.60 at time of publish) – BET NOW
Open Magic Night race with plenty of form lines to consider, but Fly Fly looks the improver here out of a tougher grade lead-up. The Team Hawkes-trained daughter of Trapeze Artist lines up for the third time out to break her maiden status and gets the run of the race from a good gate four draw with Jason Collett to ride. Second with Collett aboard last time out in the Group 2 Sweet Embrace. Has had the 1200m run now and improves.
Magic Night Stakes Form Guide
The Magic Night Stakes form guide details all of the key information punters need including saddlecloth numbers, jockeys, trainers, barriers and lead-up form. As well as the Golden Slipper Stakes, the Magic Night Stakes form has stacked up in other subsequent Sydney Group 1 races.
In 2014 Peggy Jean ran third Bring Me The Maid in the Magic Night Stakes before winning the Group 1 Inglis Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Randwick at her next start.
The previous year the Magic Night Stakes winner Scandiva (2013) finished second to Guelph in the Sires’ Produce next run, while in 2011 Magic Night Stakes runner-up Pane In The Glass ran third in the Inglis Sires’ and second the following run to Helmet in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m).
The 2022 Magic Night Stakes winner franked the form with She’s Extreme finishing second in the Group 1 Inglis Sires’ before taking out the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m). She also came back that spring to run well in events including the Group 1 Flight Stakes (2nd) and Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (3rd) before success in Flemington’s Group 1 VRC Oaks (2500m).
