To Win: No. 3 Enviable
She might still be a maiden, but ENVIABLE (11) looks ready to shake that tag in Saturday’s Fillies Classic. Chris Waller’s Frankel filly is trending the right way and brings strong Sydney form into this, having run a bold fourth in the Group 1 Flight Stakes behind Apocalyptic. That was a huge effort from a wide draw, getting back early before charging home late and hitting the line with purpose. She’s still learning her craft but clearly has ability and upside to burn. The drop in grade suits, she sticks to the mile, and while she’s drawn awkwardly again, the booking of James McDonald is a major plus. If the Flight Stakes form holds up — and I think it will — she’s a serious player and a live chance to break through. One to watch.

The Moonee Valley Fillies Classic is a Group 2 race for three-year-old fillies run at Moonee Valley Racecourse on Ladbrokes Cox Plate Day in late October during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

Previously known as the Moonee Valley Oaks and run in March during the autumn, since 2013 the event has been part of the spring line-up and makes a nice lead-up run for fillies heading towards the Group 1 VRC Oaks (2500m) at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Cox Plate Day is obviously headlined by the Group 1 Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m).
The Moonee Valley Fillies Classic is one of three Group 2 support acts along with the Moonee Valley Vase (2040m), the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1200m) moved from September in 2024, and the Crystal Mile (1600m). Contested over a mile (1600m) the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic is a set weights event and offers a total of $300,000 in prize money.
The last filly to win both the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic (then the MV Oaks) and the VRC Oaks as a three-year-old was Special Harmony who won the Fillies Classic in 2004 after her 2003 Crown Oaks victory, when the former was contested in the autumn.
In 2023 the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic winner Skybird went on to run third in that November’s Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield.
In 2025 the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic winner Salty Pearl improved on a lead-up fourth in the Thousand Guineas which moved to the Caulfield Cup Day card the year before.

Fillies may also have previously come off a run in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield a fortnight earlier before the Thousand Guineas was moved to a November timeslot in 2023.
Another possible next-up option for the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic graduates on Derby Day is the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m).
