Ladbrokes Tip: The MV Fillies Classic is a good lead-up to the VRC Oaks over the Melbourne Cup Carnival
The Moonee Valley Fillies Classic is a Group 2 race for three-year-old fillies run at Moonee Valley Racecourse on Ladbrokes Cox Plate Day in late October during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. Previously known as the Moonee Valley Oaks and run in March during the autumn, since 2013 the event has been part of the spring line-up and makes a nice lead-up run for fillies heading towards the Group 1 VRC Oaks (2500m) at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Cox Plate Day is obviously headlined by the Group 1 Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m), which is the only elite level race on the card. The Moonee Valley Fillies Classic is one of four Group 2 support acts along with the Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m), Moonee Valley Vase (2040m) and the Crystal Mile (1600m). Contested over a mile (1600m) the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic is a set weights event and offers a total of $300,000 in prize money.
The last filly to win both the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic (then the MV Oaks) and the VRC Oaks as a three-year-old was Special Harmony who won the Fillies Classic in 2004 after her 2003 Crown Oaks victory, when the former was contested in the autumn.
The latest edition of the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic ran on Saturday October 23, 2021 and was won in an upset by the Clarry Conners-trained Mokulua at 11/1.

- Best Value Roughie: #6 I Like Big Putts ($26 at time of publish)
An open race and not sure the winner, but for value to place this Waterhouse/Bott filly at 25/1 looks way overs! She scratched out of a race last weekend (that we quite fancied here in too) and gets the chance here at Group 2 level on the back of some eye-catching runs in easier grade. Winning form up to 1400m and, while she may be outclassed, she ran well four fourth at The Valley last time out so handles the course. Wider barrier probably an advantage in this field, give a chance at the price to step up.
Moonee Valley Fillies Classic Field
The Moonee Valley Fillies Classic attracts a class field of three-year-old fillies heading towards a run in a race like the VRC Oaks (formerly the Crown Oaks) or the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) against the older mares on Victoria Derby Day at Flemington Racecourse. In 2016 I Am A Star finished third in the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic Trifecta before beating the mares home in the Myer Classic next start.
Many of the fillies in the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic field come off a run in Flemington’s Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) earlier in the month, which last produced a winner with My Poppette (3rd in 2015).

Also in 2013, Gregers ran second in the MV Fillies Classic on the back of a Thousand Guineas third.
