The Moonee Valley Fillies Classic is a Group 2 race for three-year-old fillies run at Moonee Valley Racecourse on Ladbrokes Cox Plate Day in late October during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

Previously known as the Moonee Valley Oaks and run in March during the autumn, since 2013 the event has been part of the spring line-up and makes a nice lead-up run for fillies heading towards the Group 1 VRC Oaks (2500m) at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Cox Plate Day is obviously headlined by the Group 1 Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m). 

The Moonee Valley Fillies Classic is one of three Group 2 support acts along with the Moonee Valley Vase (2040m), the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1200m) moved from September in 2024, and the Crystal Mile (1600m). Contested over a mile (1600m) the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic is a set weights event and offers a total of $300,000 in prize money.

The last filly to win both the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic (then the MV Oaks) and the VRC Oaks as a three-year-old was Special Harmony who won the Fillies Classic in 2004 after her 2003 Crown Oaks victory, when the former was contested in the autumn.

In 2023 the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic winner Skybird went on to run third in that November’s Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield. 

The latest edition of the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic ran on Saturday October 26, 2024 as a VRC Oaks and Thousand Guineas lead-up race and was won by the Thousand Guineas-bound Double Market ($5.50) for Ben, Will & JD Hayes.

Has form around smart filly Bellatrix Star who won the Group 2 Schillaci from earlier this prep and her latest was an improved second over 1500m at Mornington. Can surprise.
