Kris Lees’ progressive stayer Cleveland ($6.50), a former Irish-trained galloper raced by seven-time Melbourne Cup winning owner Lloyd Williams, enjoyed his first win for the stable with a big finish off a gun ride by James McDonald to defeat 2019 Melbourne Cup winner Vow And Declare by nearly a length in the 2023 Moonee Valley Gold Cup results ahead of a likely run in the ‘race that stops a nation’ on November 7.

The Melbourne Cup-bound six-year-old is putting together a nice record and has run top two in his past four starts. Up to Group 3 company last start and was good taking out the Group 3 The Bart Cummings (2500m) over this distance at Flemington. Wide draw here and up in weight but Craig Williams stays on and the horse is proven at The Valley. Needs to improve against this field but if he can cross and be on speed could take a bit of running down late.

Runners in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup field may come off a run in the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) at the same track earlier in the month, a race that last produced a winner with The United States (6th) in 2015.

Another good lead-up race is the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) a fortnight before at Caulfield a race Bohemian Lily ran third in before her third next-up in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup in 2015.

In 2014 Prince Of Penzance won the Moonee Valley Gold Cup before returning for a second in the race in 2015 that lead to his upset Melbourne Cup victory as a $101 roughie.
