The Phar Lap Stakes is one of two Group 2 races run at Rosehill Racecourse on a Saturday in mid-March as part of Coolmore Classic Day during the annual Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

The Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) for fillies and mares is the meeting’s highlight race, while the Phar Lap Stakes is another major feature on the card.
Run over the same 1500m distance as the Group 1, the Phar Lap Stakes is an open gender race for three-years-old run at set weights with colts and geldings carrying 56.5kg and the fillies allocated 54.5kg.
The Phar Lap Stakes offers $300,000 in total prize money including $170,000 to the winner and connections. The race is a good lead-up for three-year-olds looking to step out over more distance in races like the Group 1 ATC Oaks and ATC Derby run over 2400m at Randwick Racecourse later in the autumn.
The Phar Lap Stakes – Australian Oaks double was completed on back-to-back years by Chris Waller-trained fillies with Unforgotten (2018) and Verry Elleegant (2019), and again with their stablemate Hungry Heart in 2021.
Waller took his incredible record in the race up to six wins in seven years when Hungry Heart became his fifth consecutive Phar Lap Stakes winning filly in 2021. She went on to complete the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes – ATC Oaks double that autumn.
The master trainer then won his seventh Phar Lap Stakes in 2023 with the odds-on favourite Zougotcha, and then celebrated his eighth win in 11 years with Lazzura in 2025.Â

Phar Lap Stakes Betting
Phar Lap Stakes odds are dominated each year by three-year-olds with nice lead-up autumn form in similar distanced races. Those proven over at least 1400m are usually high up the markets as are those with winning Sydney form.
Hungry Heart ($3.70 in 2021) followed by the fellow Chris Waller-trained filly Zougotcha ($1.50 in 2023) are the latest favourites in Phar Lap Stakes betting to salute for the punters.
There was a notable upset in 2024 by the previous spring’s VRC Oaks winner Zardozi who saluted second-up at Phar Lap Stakes odds of $13.
Phar Lap Stakes betting opens the Wednesday before the race following the release of the final field of acceptances and barriers.

In 2023 the fellow Waller-trained Zougotcha improved on her fourth fresh in the Surround Stakes to salute as the odds-on favourite in the Phar Lap field against the boys.
Zardozi (11th in 2024) and Lazzura (3rd in 2025) are the latest Phar Lap Stakes winners to come via a lead-up run in the Surround Stakes.
The male gallopers could come out of a number of different races in either Sydney or Melbourne including Flemington’s Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) or the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) held at Rosehill.

Phar Lap Stakes Tips
Fillies have a great recent record over the boys in the Phar Lap Stakes and make good tips in the race especially those coming out of the recently upgraded Group 1 Surround Stakes (1400m) a fortnight earlier.
Zougotcha (4th in 2023), Zardozi (11th in 2024), and Lazzura (3rd in 2025) are the latest Phar Lap Stakes winning fillies to come out of the Surround Stakes.
Trainer Chris Waller prepared eight fillies to win in 11 years with superstar mare Winx (2015), Foxplay (2017), Unforgotten (2018), Verry Elleegant (2019), Funstar (2020), Hungry Heart (2021), Zougotcha (2023), and most recently Lazzura (2025).
Taking in-form hopefuls at single figures is also a good Phar Lap Stakes betting tip with those at longer odds rarely successful.
2025 Phar Lap Stakes Tips
Our Ladbrokes’ insider Phar Lap Stakes 2025 tips and betting selections will be detailed right here soon after betting opens so stay tuned to see who to back and sack in the ATC Derby & ATC Oaks lead-up.
- To Win: #9 Lazzura ($3.40 at time of publish) – BET NOW
Chris Waller’s Snitzel filly is a dual acceptor also in the mix for the Group 1 Coolmore Classic on the card. If she does go the way of this easier Group 2 assignment against her own age she’s shaping up as a hard to beat favourite. While yet to win over further than 1200m, her lead-up runs have been eye-catching. Far from disgraced in the Group 1 Flight Stakes last campaign over the Randwick mile when fifth to her star stablemate Lady Shenandoah, she’s third-up for the autumn now after running behind that same filly twice this time in when 4th in the Group 2 Light Fingers and 3rd in the Group 1 Surround Stakes. She’s been at a big price lately but won’t be found anywhere near the 25/1 offering of last start. Well rated for this in gate two with Tommy Berry to ride. If she runs, she wins.

Phar Lap Stakes Form Guide
The Phar Lap Stakes form guide lists crucial information like the jockeys, trainers, barriers and lead-up runs of the three-year-olds in the field.
The Phar Lap Stakes form has stacked up in better autumn races in recent years including the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) for the fillies in April with the 2015 Phar Lap winner Winx running second in the Oaks two runs later. That was the last time Winx was ever beaten, the champion mare going on to win her subsequent 33 starts consecutively including a record four Cox Plate trophies.
That same year the Phar Lap Stakes runner-up Hauraki went on to win the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) before his second to Mongolian Khan in the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m). In 2009 Whobetgotyou was runner-up to Heart Of Dreams in the Phar Lap Stakes before running third in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) two starts later.
More recently Foxplay (2017) backed up from her Phar Lap Stakes win two starts later to win Randwick’s Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m), while the 2020 Phar Lap winner Funstar ran second in that year’s Queen Of The Turf Stakes.
Following that, three other Waller-trained fillies franked the Phar Lap Stakes form by winning both it and the ATC Oaks – Unforgettable (2018), Verry Elleegant (2019) and Hungry Heart (2021).
The Phar Lap Stakes 2024 winner Zardozi franked the form with a host of good next-up runs including in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (3rd), Group 1 ATC Oaks (2nd), the spring’s Group 1 The Metropolitan (2nd), Group 1 Caulfield Cup (4th), and most notably the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (4th) that November.
