The Hobartville Stakes is one of three Group races run at Rosehill Gardens during late February as part of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival action.

The meeting’s major support race sees the two-year-old Golden Slipper Stakes hopes face off in the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m), while the Hobartville Stakes also holds Group 2 status. The set weights race is open only to three-year-olds and is contested over 1400m.

Offering a juicy $400,000 in prize money including $240,000 to the Hobartville Stakes winner, the race is a traditional lead-up to the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) run at Sydney’s other premier track two weeks later.

The latest three-year-olds to complete the Hobartville Stakes – Randwick Guineas double are Dissident (2014), Hallowed Crown (2015), Kementari (2018), The Autumn Sun (2019), and Celestial Legend (2024) who also continued on to beat home the older horses in that year’s Doncaster Mile

In 2022 the Hobartville Stakes was won by Anamoe who went on to win the Rosehill Guineas two runs later along with four consecutive Group 1 races that spring including the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m).

Hobartville Stakes Betting

Hobartville Stakes odds are traditionally led by in-form three-year-old colts and geldings that performed well in tougher races during the previous spring.

Events held the year before including the Caulfield Guineas can be a key guide to the Hobartville Stakes betting markets.

Anamoe (2021-2022) was the last horse to do the Caulfield Guineas – Hobartville Stakes double.

In 2023 the Hobartville Stakes was won by Osipenko who had run third the spring prior in the Caulfield Guineas results, while in 2025 Broadsiding won the Hobartville after a 4th in the Caulfield Guineas and 3rd in the Cox Plate the spring before.

Favourites have a credible record in the race that favours three-year-olds with proven form over 1400m – 1600m and with previous Sydney race experience at this level.

There have been a number of upsets in recent years however including the boil-over 2020 win by $41 roughie Brandenburg.

Anamoe ($1.70 in 2022), Broadsiding ($2.90 in 2025) and Ninja ($2.70 in 2026) are the latest favourites in Hobartville Stakes betting to salute.

Hobartville Stakes Field

The Hobartville Stakes race field attracts a line-up of the season’s best three-year-olds showing potential to run out a mile or further leading up to autumn classics like the Randwick Guineas, Rosehill Guineas and ATC Derby.

Often horses kick off their autumn campaigns in the Hobartville Stakes so looking at their records when fresh and how they performed in the spring can be key.

Some of the horses in the Hobartville Stakes field may have had a lead-up run in the Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens a fortnight earlier, which is a popular autumn racing double and a double Kementari (2018) completed. Osipenko (5th in 2023) and Celestial Legend (5th in 2024) are the latest Hobartville winners to come out of the Eskimo Prince Stakes.

Broadsiding (2025) was the last first-up Hobartville Stakes winner.

In 2026, Ninja won the Hobartville Stakes on the back of a lead-up 2nd at the Gold Coast the month prior in the $3 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas.

Hobartville Stakes nominations are taken on the Monday before the race followed by the final acceptances and barrier draw on the Wednesday when betting also opens on the Group 2 feature.

Hobartville Stakes Form Guide

The Hobartville Stakes has proven a key form guide to follow for tougher Group 1 races during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival in recent years.

2013 Hobartville Stakes winner Pierro went on to win the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) before his second in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m), while both Dissident (2014) and Hallowed Crown (2015) took out the Randwick Guineas for their respective seasons.

In 2023 the Hobartville Stakes was won by a son of the race’s 2013 winner Pierro, Osipenko.

The Hobartville Stakes form stacked-up in the Randwick Guineas from 2013 – 2019 with all seven winners of the Group 1 coming off the lead-up.

The latest Hobartville Stakes winner to take out the Randwick Guineas next start was The Autumn Sun in 2019 who also won the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m). Anamoe (2022) was the last horse to do the Hobartville Stakes – Rosehill Guineas double. He also finished second in that year’s Randwick Guineas in between.

The colts and geldings also have a far better Hobartville Stakes winning record than the fillies.

The Hobartville form in 2023 was franked with runner-up Zou Tiger rounding out the Randwick Guineas trifecta with a Group 1 third at his next start.

The 2025 Hobartville Stakes proved the standout form race of the autumn, with winner Broadsiding backing it up with a Randwick Guineas second before going one better in the Rosehill Guineas. The runner‑up Swiftfalcon also held his form, finishing third in both the Randwick and Rosehill Guineas. Even the third‑placed filly Aeliana kept the trend rolling, running fourth in the Randwick Guineas, second in the Rosehill Guineas, and then blowing them away in the Group 1 Australian Derby, putting a five‑length gap on the boys.
