Ramornie Handicap 2021

Wednesday July 7th, 2021

Ladbrokes Tip: Peter Snowden has an excellent record in the Ramornie Handicap.

The Ramornie Handicap is held at the tail-end of the New South Winter Racing Carnival the Wednesday after Queensland’s Winx Guineas Day and takes place at Grafton Racecourse as one of two Black-Type features run by the Clarence River Jockey Club.

The mid-week Listed event is the feature race on Ramornie Handicap Day, which is the opening meeting of the two-day Grafton Cup Carnival that concludes on the Thursday with Grafton Cup Day.

A quality handicap race contested over 1200m, the Ramornie Handicap offers $200,000 in prize money and a ballot exemption into that year’s Group 3 Cameron Handicap contested at Newcastle.

The Ramornie Handicap attracts a strong line-up of winter sprinters each year and there are a host of lead-up races that offer a ballot exemption into the field including Brisbane’s Group 3 WJ Healy Stakes (1200m) held on Tattersall’s Tiara Day at Eagle Farm. Big Money (2014) was the last horse to complete the WJ Healy – Ramornie double.

The latest edition of the Ramornie Handicap ran on Wednesday July 7th, 2021 and was won by the John O’Shea-trained Southern Lad.

  • To Win: #5 Southern Lad ($9 at time of publish)

Going for a touch of value in the Ramornie and like the recent form of the John O’Shea-trained Southern Lad who looks the improver at a good price. Fourth-up here and presents fit, the Ocean Park six-year-old last seen running second in Eagle Farm’s Listed Hinkler Hcp. Carried 55.5kg there racing three wide and was only beaten a length, drops a half-kilo here and is drawn to win in gate four.
