Ramornie Handicap 2024

Ladbrokes Tip: Peter Snowden has an excellent record in the Ramornie Handicap winning his sixth in 2024 with Ka Bling.

The Ramornie Handicap is held at the tail-end of the New South Winter Racing Carnival the Wednesday after Caulfield’s Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes Day in Melbourne, and it takes place at Grafton Racecourse as one of two Black-Type features run by the Clarence River Jockey Club.

The mid-week Listed event is the feature race on Ramornie Handicap Day, which is the opening meeting of the two-day Grafton Cup Carnival that concludes on the Thursday with Grafton Cup Day.

A quality handicap race contested over 1200m, the Ramornie Handicap offers $200,000 in prize money and a ballot exemption into that year’s Group 3 Cameron Handicap contested at Newcastle.

The Ramornie Handicap attracts a strong line-up of winter sprinters each year and there are a host of lead-up races that offer a ballot exemption into the field including Brisbane’s Group 3 WJ Healy Stakes (1200m) held on Tattersall’s Tiara Day at Eagle Farm. Big Money (2014) was the last horse to complete the WJ Healy – Ramornie double.

Ka Bling (6th) for his 2024 upset meanwhile was the last Ramornie Handicap winner to come via a WJ Healy Stakes lead-up.

The latest edition of the Ramornie Handicap ran on Wednesday, July 17th, 2024 and was won in an impressive late upset by the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Ka Bling ($19).

Ramornie Handicap Betting

The Ramornie Handicap betting markets are dominated by in-form sprinters coming off good lead-up runs in events during the lead-up winter races in both Sydney and Brisbane.

There are usually short Ramornie Handicap odds offered on any quality Snowden-trained horses with Peter Snowden boasting six past victories in the race most recently with Signore Fox (2020), Ranges (2022) and Ka Bling (2024) who scored a big upset at $19.

There was also a notable upset in 2022 with The Big Goodbye winning at Ramornie Handicap odds of $15.

The Ramornie Handicap race field draws a quality line-up of winter sprinters from both local and interstate stables.

Runners may come via a number of different lead-up races including the Group 3 WJ Healy Stakes in Brisbane on Tiara Day with Ranges (3rd in 2022), The Big Goodbye (2nd in 2023) and Ka Bling (6th in 2024) are the latest Ramornie Handicap champions to come via that Eagle Farm lead-up. Ranges also fought hard before finishing third in his failed but brave 2023 Ramornie run as the defending champion.

Brisbane’s Hinkler Handicap also serves as a potential lead-up into the Ramornie with Southern Lad (2nd in 2021) the last Ramornie winner to come out of that event.

Ramornie Handicap nominations close the Thursday before race week with final acceptances revealing the field released on the Monday before the race runs on the Wednesday.

  • To Win: #3 Pereille ($1.85 at time of publish) – BET NOW

There’s a capacity Ramornie field but impossible to bet against the James Cummings-trained Pereille even at his odds-on quote. The consistent Fastnet Rock four-year-old has been in top form this prep winning in the mud at the Sunshine Coast in May before a brave Listed Hinkler Handicap second in Brisbane in mid-June on Good going. Versatile, he was under a length off the winner that day with 56.5kg. Goes up a kilo but is fit, well drawn (barrier nine) and has Zac Lloyd aboard. Good 1200m record (14:4-9-1) and looks a lovely race for him to return to winning form.
