Ladbrokes Tip: The Cameron Handicap serves as a solid lead-up to the Group 1 Epsom Handicap each spring!
The latest edition of the Cameron Handicap ran on Friday September 19, 2025 as part of Broadmeadow Racecourse’s popular Newcastle Gold Cup Day with Joe Pride’s Headley Grange ($6) winning in a new track record time ahead of a potential Epsom Handicap assignment.
2025 Cameron Handicap Results
The official Cameron Handicap Results 2025 and race finishing order will be known once the race is run and won on Friday September 19, 2025 and published below.

- 1st: #3 Headley Grange
- 2nd: #12 Vivy Air
- 3rd: #19e Fully Lit
Headley Grange ($6) delivered a brilliant performance to top the 2025 Cameron Handicap results at Newcastle on Friday, notching his tenth career victory and smashing the track record with a time of 1:28.32.
Trained by Joseph Pride and ridden by Adam Hyeronimus, the five-year-old gelding settled mid-pack before launching a powerful run in the straight to defeat Vivy Air by a length, with Fully Lit finishing third.
This win marks Headley Grange’s second stakes success, following his Listed Civic Stakes triumph earlier in the year, and also secures him a spot in the $3 million Big Dance on Melbourne Cup Day.
Pride praised the gelding’s remarkable consistency and hinted at a possible tilt at the Group 1 $1.5 million Epsom Handicap on October 4 at Randwick before targeting the Big Dance.

Cameron Handicap Tips
Cameron Handicap tips include backing gallopers coming off a top three run in a Group status Sydney lead-up race.
Avoiding the previous year’s winner should they return to defend their title is also a solid tip in the Cameron Handicap as Rock (2019-2020) is the event’s only two-time champion to date.
Male gallopers also make a better Cameron Handicap betting selection as Raspberries (2011) was the last mare to beat home the boys.
2025 Cameron Handicap Tips
Our Ladbrokes’ exclusive Cameron Handicap 2025 betting tips and Group 3 Broadmeadow racing selections will be detailed below the week of the race.
To Win: #16 Magnatear ($5.50 at time of publish)
MAGNATEAR (5) looks superbly placed and well-weighted to chase back-to-back wins at Newcastle on Friday. The Freedman-trained six-year-old by Written Tycoon has been a model of consistency over the past year and now steps up to Group 3 level in peak form. He’s third-up and full of confidence after a dominant two-length win at Eagle Farm, where he carried 60kg in a Benchmark 78. While that was a lower grade, the performance suggests he’s ready for a crack at Black-Type company. He drops sharply to 54kg, draws ideally in barrier 5, and gets the services of Zac Lloyd, which is a huge plus. With winning form at the distance and still offering value in an open race, he’s a serious contender.

The Cameron Handicap is a popular Group 3 showdown taking place in mid to late September at Newcastle Racecourse.

The 1500m showdown runs on Newcastle Gold Cup Day which also features the Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m) for Group 1-bound stayers and the Group 3 Tibbie Stakes (1400m) for fillies and mares.
The Cameron Handicap is now worth $250,000 in total prize money and is run under handicap conditions.
Each season the Cameron Handicap winner is exempt from ballot for the upcoming Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) and Excellerator (2002) was the last to do the double.
The race was first run in 1950 when Denali won.
One of the most famous Cameron Handicap winners in history was Australian 2YO Triple Crown champion Luskin Star who won in 1977. It gained its current Group 3 status in 2005.
In 2025 the first two horses in the Cameron Handicap also earn eligibility for Randwick’s $3 million The Big Dance on the first Tuesday of November.

Cameron Handicap Betting
Cameron Handicap betting markets are dominated by in-form Sydney-trained milers in good form coming off strong runs in lead-up races including Randwick’s Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) held a fortnight earlier.
Democracy Manifest (10th in 2023) was the last Cameron Handicap winner to come off a lead-up run in the Tramway Stakes.
Cameron Handicap Field
The Cameron Handicap race field attracts a quality line-up of mainly Sydney-trained middle-distance gallopers coming off lead-up runs in earlier spring races over 1200m – 1400m plus in distance.
A good lead-up race into the Cameron Handicap field is the Listed Ramornie Handicap (1200m) held at Grafton in July which offers the winner a ballot exemption into the Group 3 event at Newcastle.
Runners may also have had a tougher start in Sydney’s Group 1 Winx Stakes (1400m) in August before stepping down in grade for the Cameron Handicap.
Horses out of the Cameron Handicap field may back-up in any number of upcoming spring events including Melbourne’s Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington.
2025 Cameron Handicap Field
The official Cameron Handicap 2025 field and barrier draw will be released on the Wednesday of race week and published in full below so stay tuned to see the horses that make the line-up.
The 2025 Cameron Handicap field features a full line-up of potential Epsom Handicap and The Big Dance bound gallopers including the resuming Tavi Time carrying the 59kg topweight and the Chris Waller trained favourite Mchale coming off a second fresh at Rosehill.
