*Note: In 2021 the San Domenico Stakes meeting moved from Rosehill to Kembla Grange due to COVID-19.

The short-distance sprint is the feature race held in Sydney that day and is accompanied on the card by the Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes (1300m), while Melbourne’s Group 1 Memsie Stakes takes place on the same date at Caulfield.

The race is named in honour of four-time Group 1 winner San Domenico who dominated in the late 40s and early 50s.

Three-year-olds in the San Domenico Stakes field are often heading towards tougher events for their age group over the spring including Melbourne’s Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington. Exceedance (2019) was the last horse to complete the San Domenico Stakes – Coolmore Stud Stakes double.

The latest edition of the San Domenico Stakes ran on Saturday August 26th, 2023 and saw the Annabel Neasham-trained Libertad ($8) enjoy his second Group 3 success.

  • To Win: #2 Barber ($10 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Open edition of the San Domenico with a nice mix of returning gallopers and those with the fitness edge. Going for a bit of value and taking on the favourite with a double-figure chance from the powerhouse Godolphin stable. Putting Barber on top fresh with the horse looking to continue his flawless first-up record (2:2-0-0). Widely-drawn (barrier 13), which will be the test to get into a good position in this 1100m sprint. That said, the Exceed And Excel colt is proven at Rosehill and has a lovely record over the distance (3:2-0-1). At the current quote, happy to take a chance for a good campaign kick-off here. Was good last prep far from disgraced twice in Group 1 company. This is easier.
