San Domenico Stakes 2021

Saturday August 28th, 2021

Ladbrokes Tip: The San Domenico Stakes is a good early lead-up into the Group 1 three-year-old races in Melbourne.

The Group 3 San Domenico Stakes is a 1100m sprint showdown for three-year-olds run at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse* in August each Sydney Spring Racing Carnival. The race is run at set weights plus penalties and offers $160,000 in total prize money and was upgraded from a Group 3 race in 2005.

*Note: In 2021 the San Domenico Stakes meeting moved from Rosehill to Kembla Grange due to COVID-19.

The short-distance sprint is the feature race held in Sydney that day and is accompanied on the card by the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality and the Group 3 Premier’s Cup, while Melbourne’s Group 1 Memsie Stakes takes place on the same date at Caulfield.

The race is named in honour of four-time Group 1 winner San Domenico who dominated in the late 40s and early 50s.

Three-year-olds in the San Domenico Stakes field are often heading towards tougher events for their age group over the spring including Melbourne’s Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington. Exceedance (2019) was the last horse to complete the San Domenico Stakes – Coolmore Stud Stakes double.

The latest edition of the San Domenico Stakes ran on Saturday August 28th, 2021 and was won by the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained In The Congo.

Sticking with the favourite on what will potentially be a San Domenico run on a bottomless track. The returning Golden Slipper winner is two-from-two on Soft going so should handle a wet track fresh. The Extreme Choice colt is three-from-four and has plenty of class. Has been five months between runs and there’s some quality rivals here with the fitness edge, but think he can just edge them out.
