Scarborough Stakes 2024

Ladbrokes Tip: The Scarborough Stakes is a good betting guide for the Coolmore Stud Stakes each spring

The Scarborough Stakes – registered as the MVRC Champagne Stakes – is a Group 3 race for three-year-old fillies contested on Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes Night at Moonee Valley on a Friday evening in late September or early October during the annual Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

Racing at the meeting is headlined by the Group 1 Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes (1200m) for sprinters. The other key support races on the card include the Group 2 Feehan Stakes (1600m) for the Cox Plate-bound gallopers, Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m) for Caulfield Guineas types, and the Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) for the mares.

When referred to by its registered name (MVRC Champagne Stakes) this event should not be confused with the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) for two-year-olds held in Sydney during the autumn.

Offering $200,000 in total prize money the Scarborough Stakes is run over 1200m at set weights and serves as a nice lead-up into Flemington’s Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) held during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

In 2020 the Scarborough Stakes winning filly Swats That ran second in the Coolmore Stud Stakes quinella and also finished third to Nature Strip the following autumn in the 2021 Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning.

The 2021 Scarborough Stakes form was franked with the winner Seradess returning the following winter to win Morphettville’s Group 2 Tobin Bronze Stakes in 2022.

The latest edition of the Scarborough Stakes ran on Friday September 27th, 2024 at Moonee Valley on Ladbrokes Maniakto Stakes Night and was won in style by former Kiwi filly Bellatrix Star ($9.50) in an impressive upset.

Scarborough Stakes Betting

Scarborough Stakes odds are led by in-form fillies with form against similar company with proven ability in Group status races in Melbourne. Runners that have winning form at the distance and previous experience at the tight Moonee Valley circuit also sit high up the Scarborough Stakes odds.

Scarborough Stakes betting also favours graduates of earlier Melbourne lead-up runs for the fillies like the Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes (1200m) at the same track earlier in the month.

Scarborough Stakes Field

The Scarborough Stakes race field attracts a quality field of three-year-old fillies showing promise ahead of tougher Melbourne spring sprint races.

There’s also the potential for fillies out of the Scarborough Stakes field to contest Sydney’s $20 million The Everest (1200m) in October. Scarborough Stakes Tips

Good Scarborough Stakes betting tips to take in the spring include looking at fillies with ability at the track and distance, previous Group winners, past winners over the 1200m distance and those coming off lead-up runs in the Atlantic Jewel Stakes.

Single figure hopefuls have a dominant recent record in the race so another useful tip is to pick a runner in the top half of the markets.

  • To Win: #6 Matisse ($10 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Tricky race for the punters with plenty of promising fillies but for value like Matisse here. Trainers Anthony & Sam Freedman obviously have a high opinion as the daughter of Microphone was one of just two fillies paid up for at first acceptance stage for the Caulfield Guineas later this spring. She’s drawn wide in barrier 11 for Tommy Berry but remains a livewire chance fresh. Previous winning form first-up, this Group 2 placegetter was last seen winning at Doomben back in June. Prior to that was seventh only 2.4 lengths beaten in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes. The winning filly in that, Hayasugi, franked the form first-up this season when runner-up in the Moir. Matisse can further frank the form at a nice price and has a recent winning trial to bring her on fitness wise.

Scarborough Stakes Form Guide

The Scarborough Stakes form guide features all the essential race information including the jockeys, trainers, barriers and lead-up runs of the fillies in the field.

The Scarborough Stakes form has also stacked up in other elite level races including when the 2019 winner Loving Gaby continued on to take out the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) at the same track and distance on Cox Plate Eve. She further franked the form with Group 1 placings in the 2019 VRC Classic (2nd), 2020 Black Caviar Lightning (3rd) and 2020 Newmarket Handicap (3rd) before another elite level Moonee Valley win in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes.

The 2023 Scarborough Stakes winner Coeur Volante won the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) next start before a fourth in that year’s Group 1 Thousand Guineas results.
