The Scarborough Stakes – registered as the MVRC Champagne Stakes – is a Group 3 race for three-year-old fillies contested on Moir Stakes Night at Moonee Valley on a Friday evening in late September or early October during the annual Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

Racing at the meeting is headlined by the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) for sprinters, while the Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m) for Caulfield Guineas types, the Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) and the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) are the major support races along with the Scarborough Stakes.

When referred to by its registered name (MVRC Champagne Stakes) this event should not be confused with the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) for two-year-olds held in Sydney during the autumn.

Offering $200,000 in total prize money the Scarborough Stakes is run over 1200m at set weights and serves as a nice lead-up into Flemington’s Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) held during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

In 2020 the Scarborough Stakes winning filly Swats That ran second in the Coolmore Stud Stakes quinella and also finished third to Nature Strip the following autumn in the 2021 Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning.

The 2021 Scarborough Stakes form was franked with the winner Seradess returning the following winter to win Morphettville’s Group 2 Tobin Bronze Stakes in 2022.

The latest edition of the Scarborough Stakes ran on Friday September 29th, 2023 at Moonee Valley on Moir Stakes Night and saw the Michael Moroney-trained Coeur Volante ($10) squeeze through a late gap to charge home and post a narrow victory first-up.
