Ladbrokes Tip: The Ranvet Stakes – Tancred Stakes is a popular Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival betting double.
The HE Tancred Stakes, formerly known as The BMW, is a Group 1 race held during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival on a Saturday in late March at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse. Offering an incredible $1.5 million in prize money the weight-for-age feature runs over 2400m and is open to horses aged three-years-old and above.

The mile and a half classic is one of two top level events on the Tancred Stakes Race Day card along with the Vinery Stud Stakes. The Tancred Stakes winner is exempt from ballot from the autumn’s richest race the Group 1 $5 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes as well as the Group 1 Sydney Cup run over two miles during The Championships in April.
Horses traditionally come into the Tancred Stakes field via an earlier Rosehill autumn run in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) held over 400m shorter, which from 2012- 2017 produced three winners of the then The BMW including Silent Achiever (2014).
The Ranvet Stakes – Tancred Stakes double was then achieved again in 2019 by the Godolphin galloper Avilius, while Verry Elleegant improved on a lead-up Ranvet second before her 4.3 length win in the 2020 Tancred Stakes results. She went on to run second in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes before a huge spring that included a Caulfield Cup victory.
In 2021 the Ranvet Stakes form again held in the Tancred with the fourth placed Sir Dragonet improving on the quick turnaround to win the latter.
The next year the 2022 Tancred Stakes winner Duais backed up from a win in Flemington’s Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) becoming the first to complete the double since Preferment (2016).
The latest edition of the Tancred Stakes ran on Saturday March 30, 2024 at Rosehill Gardens and was won in a brave performance by Kris Lees’ 30/1 outsider Kalapour.

Tancred Stakes Tips
The HE Tancred Stakes tips each carnival favour proven weight-for-age gallopers with good lead-up form in Sydney coming out the traditional Ranvet Stakes lead-up run a fortnight earlier.
Horses with winning form over the distance are also a top Tancred Stakes betting tip as are those aged four-years-old or above with just the one three-year-old winning since 2004 with Fiveandahalfstar (2013).
The spread of Tancred Stakes winning barriers is diverse over the past 30 plus years but the most popular gate with seven winners since 1983 is four so looking for an in-form horse drawn near this barrier makes a top betting tip.

- To Win: #4 More Felons ($10 at time of publish) – BET NOW
Taking on the UK-trained favourite and have Chris Waller’s import More Felons on top at a juicy $10 at time of publish. Second-up and fit now getting up in trip off a win in the Listed Parramatta Cup over 1900m first-up at a big price. Melbourne Cup performed prior to that when 12th from the outside alley over the 3200m at Flemington. Good barrier here, James McDonald rides, 2400m suits. Does need to handle WFA with 59kg and a couple of good rivals, but can surprise.
