Canberra Cup Day was previously contested on a Monday, which was a public holiday in the ACT, but has moved to a Sunday in 2024.

The event is run by the Canberra Racing Club at Thoroughbred Park in Canberra and was first held back in 1926.
It once ran at Acton in the spring up until its current venue opened in 1962.
Canberra Cup Day – dubbed ‘Super Sunday’ – now once again features the Group 3 Black Opal Stakes for Golden Slipper-bound two-year-olds and typically attracts of field of mainly local and Sydney-trained horses.
In South Australia the following day punters are tuning into the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) run over the two miles at Morphettville on the Monday.
The Black-Type event holds Listed status as of 1984 and is currently contested over 2000m having been held over a variety of distances over its history.
A number of good horses have won the Canberra Cup over the years with Super Impose (1992) the most famous. Super Impose won eight Group 1 races over his illustrious career including two editions of the Doncaster Mile, Epsom Handicap and the iconic Cox Plate.
The Canberra Cup is a quality handicap race and currently offers $200,000 in total prize money.
In 2023 Arapaho won the Canberra Cup before victory in Sydney’s Group 1 Tancred Stakes (2400m) at his next start.
