UPDATE: The Coast 2024 and Gosford Gold Cup Day card moved from Gosford to Newcastle due to the Heavy (10) track at Gosford and continued rainfall.
Ladbrokes Tip: The Coast race serves as a potential lead-up to Brisbane’s Group 1 Doomben Cup.
The Coast is one of the newly-created Special Condition races conducted in New South Wales offering $500,000 in prize money and first conducted in 2021 in a further boost to provincial racing in the state.
Not a Group status event, the race runs at Gosford* in early May as a key support act on Gosford Gold Cup Day and draws horses looking to press on following Randwick’s ‘The Championships’ across the first two Saturdays in April.
*Note, in 2024 the Gosford Gold Cup Day card including The Coast race moved to Newcastle due to the bottomless track conditions and inclement weather at Gosford.
A quality handicap race, The Coast is open only to three-year-old and four-year-old horses and is run and won over 1600m. There are no class restrictions and along with the half-a-million in stakes there’s a BOBS Silver Bonus available up to $38,500 on offer to eligible runners.
The Coast race serves as a nice potential lead-up into the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival including the Group 1 $1.5 million Doomben Cup (2000m) a fortnight later.
In 2022 The Coast runs on the same date as the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes in Adelaide as well as the Gold Coast’s A.D. Hollindale Stakes Day card in Queensland, while the Listed $250,000 Gosford Gold Cup (2100m) is the feature race at the Gosford meeting.
It follows on from the introduction of other feature provincial races including The Gong (1600m) held at Kembla Grange and Newcastle’s The Hunter (1300m) both held in November for the first time in 2019.
The latest edition of The Coast ran on Saturday May 11th, 2024 as part of Gosford Gold Cup Day and ran at Newcastle Racecourse (moved from Gosford for 2024) with Leon & Troy Corstens’ progressive mudlark from Melbourne, Magnaspin ($18), posting a narrow upset in the wet.

- To Win: #2 Williamsburg ($9.50 at time of publish) – BET NOW
Williamsburg looks a nice mudlark in The Coast and remains a genuine contender even after the meeting’s move from a Heavy Gosford track to Soft going at Newcastle. The Snitzel four-year-old hasn’t won in some time with his latest being right back in October of 2022. Still, he’s got a good wet track record and was a Group 3 runner-up by a narrow margin at Rosehill in December. Gate two with Josh Parr to ride. Sixth over the mile in Brisbane last time out but improvement to come. If it’s a genuine wet track, this is your horse.
