Ladbrokes Tip: The Coast race serves as a potential lead-up to Brisbane’s Group 1 Doomben Cup
The Coast is one of the newly-created Special Condition races conducted in New South Wales offering $500,000 in prize money and first conducted in 2021 in a further boost to provincial racing in the state.
Not a Group status event, the race runs at Gosford in early May as a key support act on Gosford Gold Cup Day and draws horses looking to press on following Randwick’s ‘The Championships’ across the first two Saturdays in April.
A quality handicap race, The Coast is open only to three-year-old and four-year-old horses and is run and won over 1600m. There are no class restrictions and along with the half-a-million in stakes there’s a BOBS Silver Bonus available up to $38,500 on offer to eligible runners.
The Coast race serves as a nice potential lead-up into the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival including the Group 1 $1 million Doomben Cup (2000m) a fortnight later.
In 2022 The Coast runs on the same date as the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes in Adelaide as well as the Gold Coast’s A.D. Hollindale Stakes Day card in Queensland, while the Listed $250,000 Gosford Gold Cup (2100m) is the feature race at the Gosford meeting.
It follows on from the introduction of other feature provincial races including the $1 million The Gong (1600m) held at Kembla Grange and Newcastle’s $1 million The Hunter (1300m) both held in November for the first time in 2019.
The latest edition of The Coast ran on Saturday May 7th, 2022 as part of Gosford Gold Cup Day and was won by the Kris Lees-trained Rustic Steel ($7.50).

- To Win: #9 Chartres ($9 at time of publish)
Wide open race and a bit of value on offer for this in-form Matt Laurie-trained three-year-old from Mornington. Has previous mile winning form and brings in some strong lines having finished second two back in the Bendigo Guineas when carrying 59kg before a last start VOBIS Sires’ Guineas victory at Caulfield over 1600m. Same distance against the three and four-year-olds and comes back from 58kg to just 52kg here. Those recent runs were on Good going, but he’s already ticked the Heavy track box before. Sticking with.
The Coast Results
The inaugural The Coast results in 2021 saw Brandenburg win at odds of $8.50 from barrier 12 of 12 carrying 58.5kg to victory. The following year the Kris Lees-trained Rustic Steel won at $7.50 from gate 6 of 13 carrying just 52kg.
