The Coast 2023

Ladbrokes Tip: The Coast race serves as a potential lead-up to Brisbane’s Group 1 Doomben Cup

The Coast is one of the newly-created Special Condition races conducted in New South Wales offering $500,000 in prize money and first conducted in 2021 in a further boost to provincial racing in the state.

Not a Group status event, the race runs at Gosford in early May as a key support act on Gosford Gold Cup Day and draws horses looking to press on following Randwick’s ‘The Championships’ across the first two Saturdays in April.

A quality handicap race, The Coast is open only to three-year-old and four-year-old horses and is run and won over 1600m. There are no class restrictions and along with the half-a-million in stakes there’s a BOBS Silver Bonus available up to $38,500 on offer to eligible runners.

The Coast race serves as a nice potential lead-up into the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival including the Group 1 $1.5 million Doomben Cup (2000m) a fortnight later.

In 2022 The Coast runs on the same date as the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes in Adelaide as well as the Gold Coast’s A.D. Hollindale Stakes Day card in Queensland, while the Listed $250,000 Gosford Gold Cup (2100m) is the feature race at the Gosford meeting.

It follows on from the introduction of other feature provincial races including The Gong (1600m) held at Kembla Grange and Newcastle’s The Hunter (1300m) both held in November for the first time in 2019.

The latest edition of The Coast ran on Saturday May 6th, 2023 as part of Gosford Gold Cup Day and was won by the in-form John Sargent-trained Palmetto ($6).

The Coast Betting

The Coast betting markets are led by in-form milers with a proven record over 1600m and those coming off good lead-up form over the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

Any horses with past form at the Gosford track, those down in grade off a Group 1 or 2 performance and the better-weighted gallopers are usually found at shorter The Coast odds.

The inaugural favourite in The Coast betting was Wheelhouse ($4.40) who ran ninth in 2021. In 2022 the favourite Our Playboy ($6) ran fourth. The 2023 The Coast favourite Kayobi ($5.50) also finished fourth leaving the top elects without a win in the event to date.

  • To Win: #7 Pretty Amazing ($8 at time of publish)

Waller saddles-up a four-strong contingent in this year’s The Coast and of those Pretty Amazing looks lovely value to post a third win on the trot. Kathy O’Hara rides the in-form four-year-old mare from a good gate fourth-up and fit. The mare comes off back-to-back wins at Hawkesbury with 59kg and will relish the drop back to just 52kg here. She has a great strike-rate at the distance (5:3-1-1) and definitely looks the value here.

The Coast Results

The inaugural The Coast results in 2021 saw Brandenburg win at odds of $8.50 from barrier 12 of 12 carrying 58.5kg to victory.

The following year the Kris Lees-trained subsequent The Big Dance champion Rustic Steel won at $7.50 from gate 6 of 13 carrying just 52kg.

The Coast 2023 results saw the John Sargent-trained Palmetto salute at $6 from barrier 10 of 13 with 53.5kg.
