The Five Diamonds 2023

The $2 million The Five Diamonds runs in Sydney on the same day as Melbourne’s VRC Champions Stakes.

The Five Diamonds is a recently-created Special Conditions event that takes place at the end of the very lucrative Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.

It is held at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on the Saturday after the Melbourne Cup, which is currently known as VRC Champions Stakes Day at Flemington.

Added to the spring line-up by Racing NSW for the first time in 2022 along with the The Big Dance (1600m), which runs on Melbourne Cup Day and is now worth $3 million as of 2023, The Five Diamonds offers an impressive $2 million in stakes.

The Five Diamonds is a set weights plus penalties race run over 1800m and is only open to horses aged five-years-old that may otherwise have been heading to the breeding barn.

It is an excellent target for the previous season’s four-year-olds who contested the now $10 million The Golden Eagle (1500m) the spring prior.

The Five Diamonds runs on the same card as the $1 million Golden Gift (1100m) for two-year-olds.

The second edition of The Five Diamonds ran on Saturday November 11, 2023 at Rosehill Gardens on the Saturday after the Melbourne Cup and was won by the in-form Unspoken ($7.50) in his fourth straight victory this prep.

2023 The Five Diamonds Results

The 2023 The Five Diamonds Results & Finishing Order will be available below once the latest edition of the $2 million race is run and won on Saturday November 11, 2023.

The Five Diamonds Betting

The Five Diamonds betting markets are led by in-form five-year-old staying types, especially those to have won over the 1800m distance.

Any proven Group 1 performers, those with a previous Rosehill victory on their record, and any runners that contested the previous year’s The Golden Eagle are sure to sit high up The Five Diamonds odds.

The best five-year-olds out of the $1 million Five Diamonds Prelude (1500m) held on The Everest Day also dominate betting on the Five Diamonds race with the winner of that Follow lead-up event exempt from ballot for the big one.

Ellsberg (2022) won the inaugural edition of both the Five Diamonds Prelude and The Five Diamonds becoming the first to do the ‘Diamonds Double’.

Ellsberg ($3.30 in 2022) also saluted for the punters as the first favourite in The Five Diamonds betting to win.

The Five Diamonds Field

The Five Diamonds race field features the season’s top performing five-year-old horses that may otherwise have headed to Melbourne for a run in a race like the weight-for-age Group 1 Champions Stakes (2000m) – formerly the Mackinnon Stakes – held at Flemington on the same day.

There is a 14-starter limit to The Five Diamonds field.

Potential lead-up races into The Five Diamonds field include: the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m), the Group 2 Hill Stakes (1900m), the Group 3 Craven Plate (1800m), or the Rosehill Gold Cup (2000m) on The Golden Eagle Day.

Ellsberg won the inaugural The Five Diamonds in 2022 on the back of lead-up victories in the Epsom Handicap and Five Diamonds Prelude.

2023 The Five Diamonds Field

The official The Five Diamonds 2023 field and barriers will be announced the week of the race and published in full below.

The 2023 The Five Diamonds final field features a capacity line-up of hopeful five-year-olds including recent Toorak Handicap runner-up Antino drawn well in gate two, John Sargent’s Prelude winner Palmetto, and the Team Snowden-trained Unspoken chasing a fourth win on the trot.

The Five Diamonds Tips

Top The Five Diamonds racing tips include looking for the winners of the standout lead-up events over a similar distance and grade over the spring.

2023 The Five Diamonds Tips

Our expert team of tipsters will provide the 2023 The Five Diamonds betting tips below closer to the day so stay tuned for the middle-distance five-year-olds to back and sack this spring.

  • To Win: #3 Antino ($3.10 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Tipping a return to winning form from the Tony Gollan-trained Queenslander who comes into the lucrative feature on the back of successive second place efforts. The Redwood gelding was good with 58kg in early October winning the Group 3 Sandown Stakes before a devastatingly close second a nostril flare off Attrition from a wide alley (16) in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m). Just denied again in the Group 2 Crystal Mile by classy Kiwi raider Prowess when carrying 59kg. 57kg here has him well-weighted, gets a gun run from barrier two. Can win.

The Five Diamonds Bet Types

Win – The most basic type of bet. Put your money straight up on the runner that you think will win The Five Diamonds.

Place – Pick the horse that you think will finish in the top three positions but at lower odds.

Each-Way – Put equal amounts on a horse for the win and a place, the equivalent of two bets and you get paid out for both if it wins.

Quinella – Bet on the horses you think will finish first and second in either order. You can also pick for example one horse to finish 1st and then a combination. The fewer horses you pick the greater the dividend.

Exacta – An exacta also involves choosing horses that you think will finish first and second but it differs from a quinella in that it has to be the exact order you specify in the bet.

Trifecta – Very similar to an Exacta, but for the first, second and third placings in the correct finishing order. You can also Box Trifecta to finish in any of the first 3 combinations.

First Four – A First Four bet works the same as an Exacta and Trifecta but for the first four runners in finishing order.
