LINDERMANN (14), the ultra-consistent Lonhro gelding from the Chris Waller stable, is the horse to beat in this year’s Hill Stakes at Rosehill, heading the market as the firm favourite to claim Sydney’s richest race this Saturday. Despite drawing wide — barrier 15, now gate 14 following the scratching of Naval College — the in-form six-year-old remains strongly supported, with Nash Rawiller sticking aboard. Waller is chasing his seventh Hill Stakes title, and all signs suggest Lindermann is the runner to deliver it. Two starts back, he claimed the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes, defeating none other than Sir Delius, now one of the top fancies for both the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup. He then went down narrowly to his star stablemate Fangirl in a thrilling finish to the $1 million 7 Stakes at Randwick, further underlining his genuine Group 1 credentials. With a strong Rosehill record (7:3-1-1) and proven form over the 2000m trip, he looks perfectly placed fourth-up to peak again. Tough, in-form, and ready to strike — wide draw aside, Lindermann is my clear top pick.

The Hill Stakes is a Group 2 race now run at Rosehill Gardens in early October each Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.
Previously part of Randwick’s Epsom Handicap Day card, the race is now the headline event on its own feature race meeting at Rosehill and offers $2 million in stakes.
The Hill Stakes is now also contested over 1900m (down from 2000m) under weight-for-age conditions making it a nice lead-up into the Group 1 Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) run at Moonee Valley at the end of October. In 2016 the Hill Stakes winner Hartnell finished runner-up to the defending champion Winx in the Cox Plate quinella and also finished in the money when third in the Melbourne Cup over two miles on the first Tuesday of November.
The Hill Stakes – Cox Plate double however hasn’t been completed since Saintly (1996).
The other key races on Hill Stakes Day in 2023 include the $1.5 million Alan Brown Stakes (1400m), $500,000 Tapp-Craig (1400m), Group 2 $300,000 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m), Group 3 $500,000 Gloaming Stakes (1800m), and the Group 3 $250,000 The Nivison (1200m).
