To Win: No. 4 Master Of Air
With WITHIN THE LAW coming out, I’m switching lanes and siding with MASTER OF AIR (2) to make it three on the bounce. Chris Waller’s Dundeel colt is trending the right way—two wins at Kembla Grange, showing he’s fit, versatile, and ready to rise in grade. He broke his maiden in style on a Heavy (8), putting five lengths on them over 1200m, then backed it up on a Good (3) surface with another win, this time under 58kg. He drops to 56.5kg here, draws perfectly in barrier two, and gets Tommy Berry in the saddle—plenty to like. The 1800m is the test, but being by Dundeel (who won this race and the Spring Champion in 2012), he’s bred to get it. He’ll need to lift, but the signs are good, and he’s got the engine to do it. I’m happy to be in his corner.

The Gloaming Stakes is a Group 3 set weights race for three-year-olds currently run at Rosehill Racecourse on a Saturday in October during the annual Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.

The event is now held on Hill Stakes Day. Racing on the card is headlined by the $2 million Group 2 Hill Stakes for potential Ladbrokes Cox Plate hopes.
It moved from The Everest Day at Randwick in 2023 to Hill Stakes Day at Rosehill in 2024.
Other key races on the Hill Stakes Day card include the $1.5 million Alan Brown Stakes (1400m), $500,000 Tapp-Craig (1400m), Group 2 $300,000 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m), and the Group 3 $250,000 The Nivison (1200m).
Graduates out of the Gloaming Stakes field may go on to run in tougher Sydney and Melbourne races over the spring carnival, and the Gloaming Stakes winner is exempt from ballot for the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m).
Shadow Hero (2019), Sharp ‘N’ Smart (2022) and El Castello (2024) are the latest horses to complete the Gloaming Stakes – Spring Champion Stakes double.
The Gloaming Stakes was first run in 1978 and is named after star galloper Gloaming who won 19 straight races, a then Australasian racing record he co-held with Desert Gold.
There’s also a potential for the Gloaming Stakes graduates to take on the older horses in the iconic Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) run at Moonee Valley in October. In 2009 So You Think completed the Gloaming Stakes – Cox Plate double as a three-year-old and returned as a four-year-old in 2010 to claim his second Cox Plate trophy.
