Ladbrokes Tip: WA Guineas graduates often back-up in the Northerly Stakes in the summer
The W.A. Guineas is a Group 2 race run at Ascot Racecourse in late November during the Perth Summer Racing Carnival on Railway Stakes Day.

The first of the major Western Australian race days over the summer season, Railway Stakes Day is headlined by the Group 1 $1.5 million Railway Stakes (1600m) for milers.
The WA Guineas for three-year-olds is the other key race on the card and is contested over 1600m at set weights. The race offers $500,000 in total prize money and makes a nice lead-up for youngsters looking to take on the older horses in the Group 1 Northerly Stakes (1800m) in December – formerly the Kingston Town Classic – over the extra metres. The latest horses to complete the WA Guineas – Kingston Town Classic / Northerly Stakes double in the same year were Amelia’s Jewel (2022), Arcadia Queen (2018), Ihtsahymn (2013) and Playing God (2010).
The latest edition of the WA Guineas ran on Saturday November 25, 2023 as the key support act on Perth’s Railway Stakes Day card and was won by the Neville Parnham-trained son of Playing God, Zipaway ($7).

WA Guineas Betting
WA Guineas betting markets open weeks in advance of the Railway Stakes Day support race as soon as early entries close about a month out.
Each summer the WA Guineas odds are led by class local three-year-olds coming off a top three run in a traditional lead-up race like the Fairetha Stakes or the WA Champion Fillies Classic for the female three-year-olds taking on the boys in the Group 2.
Watch Me Dance (2020) is the last three-year-old to do the WA Champion Fillies Stakes – WA Guineas double.
Zipaway (4th in 2023) is the last WA Guineas winner to come via a lead-up run in the Listed Fairetha Stakes.
Upsets in the race are not uncommon however and the last winners to jump at double-figures in the WA Guineas betting markets were Rommel ($21 in 2014), Variation ($13 in 2016), and War Saint ($31 in 2019).
Treasured Star ($2.90 in 2021) and subsequent Northerly Stakes winning filly Amelia’s Jewel ($1.90 in 2022) are the latest WA Guineas betting favourites to salute for the punters.
WA Guineas Tips
Top WA Guineas tips to consider each summer include looking for local runners with a good record at Ascot that finished in the money at the track last time out in similar company and any runners proven over the mile distance.
Fillies also have a good recent record running top three in the WA Guineas trifecta, including in 2017 when fillies ran first (Perfect Jewel) and third (Art Series) and the win by Arcadia Queen (2018), so taking the better performed females in the race, especially those that ran well in the WA Champion Fillies Classic, is also a good WA Guineas betting tip.
In 2020 the fillies were on top again with Watch Me Dance the latest to complete the WA Champion Fillies Stakes – WA Guineas double, while in 2021 yet another filly beat home the boys in the WA Guineas results with Treasured Star saluting.
Amelia’s Jewel (2022), who saluted as the odds-on favourite, is the last WA Guineas winning filly.
2023 WA Guineas Tips
Our Ladbrokes’ insider WA Guineas 2023 betting tips and exotic Group 2 Perth racing selections will be detailed below the week of the race so stay tuned for the three-year-olds to back this summer.
- To Win: #13 Super Smink ($3 at time of publish) – BET NOW
There’s a genuine battle for top spot in the WA Guineas markets by two in-form fillies but leaning towards the Dan Morton-trained Super Smink in gate three with Chris Parnham to ride. The daughter of Super One is out over a mile for the first time here but has a lovely Ascot track record (6:3-2-1) she’s looking to continue. Was the two-year-old star during the autumn winning the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate – WA Sires’ double. First-up winner in a Listed race before the winning streak came to an end with her last start second in Listed Burgess Queen Stakes as the beaten odds-on favourite Keshi Boom. Keshi Boom is unbeaten and also runs in the WA Guineas field, but with these two now at equal weights think Super Smink can turn the tables.
WA Guineas Field
The WA Guineas race field attracts a quality line-up of mainly local three-year-old staying types looking to bag a Group win in Perth over the summer.
2018 WA Guineas winner Arcadia Queen (pictured in Sydney) won the Group 1 Kingston Town Stakes next-up. Photo: Steve Hart.
Interstate contenders rarely make the trip west to run in the WA Guineas however in 2012 the Peter Snowden-trained Academus (2012) travelled over from Melbourne and won. One of the key lead-ups to the mile clash is the Listed Fairetha Stakes (1400m) held earlier in the month at the same track.
Recent WA Guineas winners to come off a Fairetha Stakes run include Zipaway (4th in 2023), War Saint (4th in 2019), Man Booker (2nd in 2015), Rommel (2nd in 2014) and Ihtsahymn (6th in 2013) who turned the tables on that year’s Fairetha Stakes winner Saint Bro who ran third next start in the Guineas.
Fillies taking on the boys in the WA Guineas field meanwhile often come off a run in the Group 3 WA Champion Fillies Classic (1600m) the week before, a race that produced the 2015 Guineas runner-up Spirit Bird (4th) and the 2017 third place-getter in the Guineas Art Series (1st). In 2018 Arcadia Queen completed the WA Champion Fillies Classic – WA Guineas double, a feat emulated just two years later by Watch Me Dance (2020).
Graduates out of the WA Guineas field often back-up in the Kingston Town Classic (now run as the Northerly Stakes) and the double has recently been achieved by Amelia’s Jewel (2022) Arcadia Queen (2018), Ihtsahymn (2013) and Playing God (2010) who also won the 2011 edition of the Group 1.
W.A. Guineas nominations close on a Tuesday in early October followed by the release of the final field of acceptances and barriers on the Wednesday of race week.

The official WA Guineas 2023 Final Field is announced the Monday of race week and will be published in full below once released so stay tuned to see what local and / or interstate three-year-olds make the starting line-up in the half-a-million-dollar summer showdown.
The WA Guineas 2023 field features a line-up of smart three-year-olds led in betting by the undefeated Grant & Alana Williams-trained Group 3 WA Champion Fillies Stakes winner Keshi Boom and Dan Morton’s Group 2 winning filly Super Smink.

WA Guineas Form Guide
The WA Guineas form guide details all the crucial information including the jockeys, trainers, barriers and lead-up runs of the three-year-olds in the Group 2 race field.
In recent years the WA Guineas form has stacked up in the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) – Now Northerly Stakes – the next month back at Ascot Racecourse with plenty of three-year-olds running top three in both races.
The 2021 WA Guineas form was franked with third place-getter Devoted winning his next three races over the winter including in the Listed Belmont Guineas (1600m).
Winning filly Amelia’s Jewel franked the 2022 WA Guineas form winning the Northerly Stakes next start before returning in the autumn of 2023 to take out the Group 3 Roma Cup and place second in the inaugural $4 million The Quokka slot race.
She also travelled to Melbourne in the spring of 2023 and won the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes and Group 2 W.H. Stocks Stakes.
