A-League Round 22 Preview

Round 22 of the A-league begins on Friday night with a match between the in-form Sydney FC and Melbourne City at Allianz Stadium; wrapping up with an always-exciting fixture between the Roar and top-placed Phoenix in Brisbane on Sunday afternoon.

With only six weeks of regular season matches remaining, competition points have never been more vital, making for a particularly interesting weekend of football from a betting standpoint.

We’re offering the best odds on the widest range of markets for all A-League matches around the country this weekend.

Sydney FC vs Melbourne City

Sydney FC play host to Melbourne City this weekend in what is set to be a goal-fest, after both teams scored a combined nine goals against their respective opponents in Round 21. City are winless in their five most recent away games and failed to score on four of those occasions, while FC have climbed to second after winning six of their last seven matches, netting a total of 25 goals. Sydney appear an obvious pick in this fixture, however they leaked goals against Brisbane Roar last week and were lucky not to share the points. City are chasing a finals berth and will do everything they can to secure more competition points, meaning a draw may be worth consideration.

Western Sydney Wanderers vs Newcastle Jets

In what may figure as the weekend’s tightest contest, the bottom-placed Newcastle Jets will travel down the highway to face the current club champions of Asia but second-last in the A-League, Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday afternoon. Newcastle secured several commendable results in the early stages of season ten, but since their notable off-field turmoil in which several of the club’s players and staff were sacked, have rarely looked like winning. In what may be a good omen, the Jets have scored in every away game they have played against the Wanderers, and will face a side who have failed to keep a clean sheet in their six most recent outings.

Adelaide United vs Melbourne Victory

One of the league’s most spiteful head-to-heads formed between Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory when the latter towelled-up the former 6-0 in the final of season 2. Adelaide figured as realistic premiership threats leading into the Asian Cup break but have since been unable to post much of a consistent run of form and have slipped to fifth. The Victory appear to be peaking at the right time and enter this fixture third overall after delivering the Jets a 4-0 hiding at home last weekend. Adelaide is always difficult to overcome at Coopers Stadium and is unbeaten in their last 6 meeting at home against Melbourne, but the Victory will be brimming with confidence having posted a league-high 43 goals this campaign.

Central Coast Mariners vs Perth Glory

Perth Glory slipped to fourth overall after losing to Wellington Phoenix at home last week, but are offered a great opportunity of a return to form when facing the misfiring Mariners in Gosford on Sunday. Perth have conceded only nine goals away from home this season and are offered an even greater chance of success against the team with the league’s worst home record. The Mariners have lost their last three meetings with Perth, who secured a 1-0 defeat to go top of the table in November most recently. Perth offer particularly good value at $2.15 odds in head-to-head markets here.

Brisbane Roar vs Wellington Phoenix

Wellington Phoenix appear on track to secure a maiden premiership this season after going top of the league last weekend, but are sure to be tested by a Brisbane outfit who went down last weekend despite scoring four goals. The Phoenix have never won or kept a clean sheet in 12 trips to Brisbane but have secured more away wins than any other franchise this season. As a result of winning six of their last seven meetings with Wellington, the Roar are interestingly favourites to win this match on Sunday, however the Phoenix have arguably never been in a better position to break their Brisbane hoodoo.
