A-League Week 2 Preview

Week 2 of the 2015/16 A-League season gets underway in Adelaide on Friday night when the Reds play host to Western Sydney at Coopers Stadium.

In a week that will see a number of key rivals clash including Brisbane Roar and the Central Coast Mariners, the round’s highlight match is undoubtedly the first edition of the Melbourne Derby for season 11 on Saturday night.

We’re offering the best odds on the widest range of markets for all five matches in Week 2 of the A-League!

Adelaide United vs Western Sydney Wanderers

Neither Adelaide nor Western Sydney were able to post a campaign-opening win in week 1 of the A-League and will both with this match as an ideal opportunity to find winning form. Adelaide were competitive with reigning champions the Victory for the entirety of their nil-all draw but were probably helped along by an unfortunate red card to Melbourne’s Lee Broxham, while Western Sydney were unable to overcome three serious lapses in concentration and defence in their first half against Brisbane Roar and were comfortably beaten. Adelaide at home is one of the league’s toughest fixtures and the Reds should justify their clear favouritism.

Newcastle Jets vs Sydney FC

Week 1’s surprise packets Newcastle return home to face a Sydney FC side that were starved of a goal and held to a draw by Melbourne City first-up, on Saturday afternoon. Newcastle finished the 2014/15 season well off the pace in last and were not expected to make much of an impact in New Zealand last weekend, but mustered an impressive 2-1 win over the Phoenix, highlighted by an impressive goal off the head of David Carney. Sydney were clearly shaking off the cobwebs in Week 1 and will be far better for the run but cannot afford to underestimate a confidence-rich Jets team, particularly this early in the season. Sydney deserve to be favourites on class alone but if Newcastle play like they did last weekend, they are more than capable victors.

Melbourne Victory vs Melbourne City

Week 2 of the A-League is undoubtedly highlighted by the first edition of the Melbourne Derby for season 2015/16, and arguably the two sides have never boasted better rosters than they do currently. The Victory secured their third championships las season, while City made plenty of waves on their way to the final four and will be far-better for it this time around. Both teams were held to goal-less draws in week 1 which is sure to add extra spice into what has quickly become a bitter affair. Look towards players like Besart Berisha for Melbourne Victory to be the difference in this match.

Brisbane Roar vs Central Coast Mariners

Brisbane Roar and the Central Coast Mariners were arguably the league’s two best teams in week 1 and this fixture is sure to be an exciting one as a result. The Roar were quick to get on the scoresheet away to the Wanderers, and while immediately allowing a response, rallied to score two more goals in a pretty dominant display. Central Coast employed their typical style of well-drilled, consistent football with plenty of passing and it was too much for a favoured Perth Glory outfit, walking away 3-2 victors. These two sides have built a great rivalry since their famed meeting in the 2010/11 decider, but we’re confident Brisbane will have a slight edge in their first match at home this campaign.

Perth Glory vs Wellington Phoenix

Week 2’s final fixture will peg Perth Glory and Wellington Phoenix against one-another in the nation’s west on Sunday evening. These two teams were undoubtedly the most disappointing in dropping all the points in week 1 and will be desperate to find winning form. A shining light for the men in purple, Richard Garcia was hard to handle for the Mariners’ defence last weekend and scored a terrific goal to draw his side level in the first half. Wellington lacked spark in their loss to the Jets, but what was perhaps most worrying was their inability to capitalise when Newcastle went a man down following Nigel Boogaard’s red card. Perth at home should win this match, and offer great value for money in win-draw-win markets.
