Week 17 of the A-League gets underway in the best way possible on Friday night when the table-topping Wanderers host the in-form Melbourne City in Parramatta. Both teams have been nothing short of sensational through recent weeks and are rightfully placed in the first two positions in the league thanks to some impressive performances over notably opposition. The Wanderers found a way to see off a spirited Mariners outfit late in the piece on Saturday while Melbourne City’s attacking potency was once again on display in a 3-1 win over the Phoenix. Former Wanderers man Aaron Mooy is undoubtedly the linchpin in the result of this fixture and if he fires, City will be very hard to stop. A draw at current $3.80 odds represents terrific value.
Wellington Phoenix vs Central Coast Mariners
Eighth plays tenth when the Wellington Phoenix and Central Coast Mariners meet across the ditch on Saturday afternoon. Neither team has been able to make much of an impression on the A-League this season, between a sprinkling of good performances, and post-season berths are all but out of the question as a result. Pride is therefore the only thing on the line this weekend. The Phoenix are undoubtedly better at home than they are on the road and will be looking to atone for last week’s comfortable loss to Melbourne City. If they can control possession from the outset, Ernie Merrick’s men will probably be too good for the Mariners.
Sydney FC vs Brisbane Roar
Matches between Sydney FC and the Brisbane Roar are typically well-fought and Saturday night’s meeting between the two clubs is sure to play to a similar tune. The Roar returned to the top of the A-League ladder following Week 14’s fixtures but have received a huge reality check in losing 4-0 to the Victory in Week 15 and 4-1 to Adelaide at home last Friday night. Sydney, while disappointingly losing the Big Blue 1-0 on Australia Day are in a good position to hand the Roar a third-straight loss and realistically will win at home.
Perth Glory vs Melbourne Victory
The Perth Glory have made strides back towards possible finals contention through recent weeks and will look to continue their march past the Melbourne Victory at home this weekend. The Glory failed to respond favourably to last season’s sensational dumping from the finals series when stalling in the blocks from the outset this campaign, but a number of positive results capped by a 6-1 demolition of the Jets last weekend sees their sails full of wind. The Victory’s inconsistent run of form appears to have passed after the followed up their 4-0 win over the Roar with another Big Blue triumph this week. This is undoubtedly the biggest test the Glory have faced of late but they are worth consideration at current odds.
Adelaide United vs Newcastle Jets
Adelaide United have climbed to sixth in overall standings and will be confident of continuing their charge to the finals when they host the lowly Jets on Sunday afternoon. The Reds have made a habit of hitting the back of the net recently and have amassed an impressive 10 goals for and only 3 against through their three most recent matches. Adelaide deserve to be resounding favourites and won’t lose this match if they are serious title contenders.
