2019 Golden Slipper Day Preview

Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m) - Race 1 12:30pm

Resin resumed with a good performance to finish third in the Group 3 Wenona Girl Quality a fortnight ago and will take plenty of improvement into this race. The talented daughter of Exceed And Excel found the lead at the 200m but was entitled to weaken late, and her wide draw on Saturday isn’t too much of a cause for concern as she’ll settle off the pace regardless. This looks an ideal second-up target.

Listed Darby Munro Stakes (1200m) - Race 2 1:10pm

Classique Legend has recorded two wins from as many starts and has opened an odds-on favourite in Darby Munro Stakes betting. The Not A Single Doubt gelding has stamped himself as a horse to follow, but this is easily the biggest test of his career and does look big unders at his current price.

Jonker worked home well to finish third in the Listed Fireball Stakes a fortnight ago and will improve into this race. The Spirit Of Boom colt has been a strong and largely consistent performer throughout his racing career so far and while he may be a little below the ability of the country’s best three-year-olds, he’s certainly up to winning a race of this calibre.

Group 3 N E Manion Cup (2400m) - Race 3 1:45pm

The quality of staying fields in Sydney recently has been outstanding and this is certainly no exception. Shraaoh remains prominent in early Sydney Cup betting and looks well placed to return to winning form here. The European import won at Flemington on debut in spring and while he clearly required the run when he finished ninth in a 1500m race first-up this time, there was plenty to like about his run for second behind Hiyaam in the Listed Randwick City Stakes last time out. Getting out to a mile and a half and with Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle, he’ll take a power of beating.

Kiwi raider Vin De Dance has good form on heavy going and is worth consideration at his current NE Manion Cup odds. A son of Roc De Cambes, Vin De Dance won at Listed level in his homeland last month and was last seen finishing fifth in the Group 1 New Zealand Stakes.

Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) - Race 4 2:25pm

The Autumn Sun has returned to the races in typically bullish form this time and looks the one to beat again in the Rosehill Guineas. Now a four-time Group 1 winner, The Autumn Sun has won both the Hobartville Stakes and Randwick Guineas this time and is drawn to receive a beautiful run on Saturday from barrier 3. This will be his first attempt at 2000m, but everything he has done so far suggests he’ll get the trip. He is far too short in the market and I am happy to watch

Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) - Race 5 3:05pm

The world’s best racehorse will step out, potentially for the second-last time in the George Ryder Stakes and is obviously the horse to beat. She’s broken records all over the place and will be seeking a thirty-second consecutive race win on Saturday, and her two runs this time in have been typically dominant. She’s even better on a rain-affected track and I’ll be happy to watch this one for the spectacle that it is.

Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) - Race 6 3:45pm

Beaten Australian Cup favourite Avilius will seek redemption in the Ranvet Stakes and is primed to break through for his first Group 1 victory. The Pivotal gelding has been largely terrific since arriving in Australia last spring and his runs in the Carlyon Cup and Peter Young Stakes prior to his last effort were excellent. The booking of Kerrin McEvoy is promising and he’ll be at peak fitness for this run, at what is probably his best trip.

Unforgotten has improved with her two starts this time and does look a touch of overs at her current price. The Group 1 winner dusted off the cobwebs with a credible run for fifth behind Winx in the Apollo Stakes, before finishing off well for third in the Group 1 Chipping Norton last time out. Hugh Bowman has elected to jump off Avilius to ride Unforgotten on Saturday and she’ll relish getting out to 2000m.

Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) - Race 7 4:39pm

The Golden Slipper has drawn an outstanding group of two-year-olds this year and there’s a case to be made for nearly every horse in the capacity field. Godolphin will launch a strong multi-pronged attack, while Team Snowden will also saddle several live chances.

Tenley is yet to taste anything but success and looks a great chance after drawing an ideal barrier (6). The daughter of Medaglia D’Oro was an easy winner of the Pierro Plate first-up this time before recording her first black type win in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes two weeks ago.

Exhilarates will need to overcome a wide barrier, but she has the runs on the board and looks ready for another big performance in the Golden Slipper. The beautifully-bred filly won the Magic Millions 2YO Classic in January and resumed with an eye-catching run for second in the Reisling Stakes.

Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) - Race 8 5:10pm

The Galaxy typically draws and open field of sprinters and there are several winning chances in this confirmed group of 13.

Redzel has been the benchmark for sprinters in Australia for several seasons now and will be tough to beat in The Galaxy. Winner of both editions of The Everest, Redzel resumed this time for a close-up second in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes and will take plenty of improvement into this race. He relishes the heavy going and will give them something to chase.

Pierata spotted his rivals too great a start in the Canterbury Stakes first-up, but he worked to the line extremely well and will take plenty of improvement from the run. The four-year-old son of Pierro is also a proven performer on heavy going.

Group 3 Epona Stakes (1900m) - Race 9 5:45pm

A tough way to end Golden Slipper Day from a betting perspective and a case to be made for several mares in the market.

This is a step up in class for Jungle Fish, but she has been racing extremely well this time and looks up to winning a race of this quality. The daughter of Smart Missile ended her last prep with a good run for fourth in the Group 3 Adrian Knox over 2000m at Randwick and she’s won each of her three starts this time with relative ease.
