Canterbury Preview – Wednesday 22nd January

Street Boss @ Darley Handicap (1250m) - Race 1 2:20pm AEDT

There’s limited form to dissect ahead of the first Canterbury on Wednesday; a maiden sprint for three-year-old fillies, however the Chris Waller-trained April Rain was impressive on debut and looks tough to beat. April Rain showed ability at the trials prior to her debut and mustered an eye-catching turn of foot to finish second behind Quantico here earlier this month. She’ll enjoy good improvement for that experience.

Headwater @ Vinery Handicap (1250m) - Race 2 2:55pm AEDT

Race 2 is essentially the same race as the first but for colts & geldings and of the ten confirmed starters, three will be making their racing debuts.

I can’t find an angle that I am particularly keen to pursue and will be happy to watch, with a view towards something later in the season.

Vale Mr Bob Whyburn Handicap (1900m) - Race 3 3:30pm AEDT

Miyaki could hardly have been more impressive when breaking his maiden at Kembla Grange last time out and he can continue his rise through the grades at Canterbury on Wednesday. The Deep Impact colt didn’t show a lot during his short debut prep, but worked home well to finish fifth on the Kensington course at his only other start this time in. He’ll take further improvement into this race and looks a colt capable of progression to black type race.

Ranvet Handicap - Heat Of The Rising Star (1200m) - Race 4 4:05pm AEDT

The Man was an impressive winner off a long spell when resuming and will only improve second-up on Wednesday. A lightly raced son of I Am Invincible, The Man is yet to run a bad race and appears to have returned to the track a more furnished horse this time in. Trainer Chris Waller elected to scratch the horse from a race here last Friday, and this does look a nice contest for him.

Sky Racing Active Handicap (1550m) - Race 5 4:40pm AEDT

Twentyfour Carat has a fitness edge over his major rivals in the fifth at Canterbury and will take plenty of beating. The I Am Invincible colt has continued to improve with racing this time and was last seen recording a well-deserved win in a similar race on the Kensington course. He’s drawn well and will have the added benefit of Billy Owen’s claim.

Schweppes Handicap (1100m) - Race 6 5:15pm AEDT

This looks like being one of the better races of the day at Canterbury, but several quality horses are resuming and for that reason, I’m keen to have something on the David Pfieffer-trained Coco Cuber. Coco Cuber ran second here at Canterbury on debut before immediately returning to the paddock and picked up where he left off when a stylish winner of a maiden race at Gosford when resuming. He was last seen finishing fourth in a tougher race at Warwick Farm and will take further improvement into this. He’s drawn well with Nash Rawiller confirmed to ride.

Canterbury League Club Handicap (1250m) - Race 7 5:50pm AEDT

Bound To Win hasn’t tasted anything but success since resuming and can continue her rise through the grades in the last at Canterbury. The Peter & Paul Snowden-trained filly broke her maiden with ease at Newcastle first-up, before producing another quality effort to win in BM64 company last time out. This is harder, but she should be given every opportunity to win again.
