He’s just won The US Open and the current world number 18 is a star on the rise.

The Englishmen held out Will Zalatoris and world number 1 Scottie Scheffler this morning in Massachusetts to claim his first Major.

To celebrate Fitzpatrick’s win this morning, we thought we would do a bit of digging and give you punters 10 things you didn’t know about Matt Fitzpatrick.

1. He’s a mad Sheffield Fan

Born in Sheffield, England. Fitzpatrick is a mad football fan and has even attempted to convert US fans to the beautiful game by handing out Sheffield Kits while on the tour.

2. His Younger Brother Has Just Turned Pro

Matt’s younger brother Alex has just joined the pros after a very successful stint as an amateur. He made his PGA Tour debut at the Valspar Championship.

3. He is a US Amateur Champion

Way back in 2013 when Fitzpatrick was just 19. He became the first Englishmen in 102 years to win the US Amateur Championships.

4. He Was The #1 in the World Amateur Rankings

Following his Amateur Championships win in 2013, Fitzpatrick shot up to the top of the Amateur rankings. Joining some pretty elite company: Rickie Fowler, Jordan Speith and Rory McIlroy all achieved the same honor.

5. The US Open is not his first win at The Country Club

Clearly he knows the course pretty well. Back in 2013 (What a year for the young man) Fitzpatrick won the U.S. Amateur at the same course he won the US Open at this morning. To top it off. Fitzpatrick was the first Englishmen to lift the Havemeyer Trophy in 98 years.

6. He Has A Pretty Experienced Caddy

On Fitzpatrick’s bag is Billy Foster. Foster is a veteran caddy who has carried sticks for a golfers like Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood and Darren Clarke .

7. He’s the first Englishmen to win the U.S. Open since Justin Rose in 2013

Not the biggest drought he’s even broken (see above) but another drought that Fitzpatrick has broken nonetheless.

8. He Made A Brief Cameo On The College Circuit

Fitzpatrick became a Wildcat in 2013, playing golf for Northwestern University but his college stint was quite brief. Fitzpatrick only lasted a semester before dropping out to play golf full time.

9. He Once Celebrated A Win at Subway

The British Masters in 2015 was Fitzpatrick’s first win of his proffesional career. First prize saw him net a monster £500,000 payday. How did the young fella celebrate his big win? With a trip to Subway.

10. He Is Only The Second Ever Person to Win an Amateur & U.S. Open At The Same Course

Fitzpatrick joins legend Jack Nicklaus as the only other male golfers to win a U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open at the same course. Nicklaus achieved the feat at Pebble Beach back in 1961 & 1972.

Very elite company indeed.
