Get ready for an electrifying day at Ascot this Saturday, as Perth’s richest race, The Quokka, headlines a spectacular ten-race program.
Overpass returns to the west looking to create history by winning the $5 million feature for the third year in a row and has been installed as a hot favourite to achieve the miraculous feat.
Other highlights on the card include the $500k G2 Karrakatta Plate and The Joey.
I’m feeling very confident about the chances of my selections in the main races including The Quokka!
So, if your’re looking to gain an edge at Ascot then you’ve come to the right place.
My Quokka Day preview has everything you need to stay ahead of the game!
Race 1 - 1:19pm AEST
BM72+ HANDICAP (1600 METRES)
Western Power (6) was luckless when held up for the best part of the whole straight when resuming over 1400m here two starts ago with a 1.4 length fifth.
The Michael Grantham-trained gelding made up for that disappointment last start when despite sitting three-wide throughout, he let down powerfully to comfortably win over 1400m here by a neck.
The rise to a mile is ideal with increased fitness and he did go within a neck of winning over this course and distance the only previous time he took it on.
He’s drawn the outside in the small field, but he should have too much zip for his rivals.
1 Unit – Western Power (6)
Race 2 - 1:54pm AEST
No Metro Wins Handicap (1000 METRES)
Wicked Venom (3) resumes here and does his best work when fresh.
The four-year-old gelding has won two of three first-up races including last preparation when letting down strongly over this distance at Northam to win by just under a length.
He looked particularly good in a recent trial where he led before drawing clear in the straight for an easy 3.1 length win.
There looks to be good speed in the race which will aid his cause and will hopefully see him steam home over the top.
1 Unit – Wicked Venom (3)
Race 3 - 2:29pm AEST
BM66+ Handicap (1800 METRES)
Be Bardot (4) returned in great order three starts back with a head second over 1200m here.
Unfortunately, the Grant & Alana Williams-trained mare was caught behind tiring horses when having plenty to offer second-up so his 2.9 length eighth can be forgiven.
She bounced back to her best last start over 1600m here where she produced a damaging turn of foot to charge home from the back for a length victory.
William Pike sticks and the rise to 1800m looks ideal for the up-and-coming daughter of Toronado.
2 Units – Be Bardot (4)
Race 4 - 3:04pm AEST
BM66+ Handicap (1400 METRES)
Lova Session (7) rarely runs a bad race and is unlucky not to be going for her third win in a row.
Two starts ago the Adam Durrant-trained mare ran on strongly down the outside to get up in the final strides for a nose victory over 1400m.
She should have won last start over 1500m here if not for being held up mid-straight but to her credit she flew home once clear to finish a head second.
She has a good record over this course and distance and ‘The Wizard’ William Pike sticks.
1 Unit – Lova Session (7)
Race 5 - 3:39pm AEST
3YO Open Handicap (1400 METRES)
Sixinch Heels (1) has won all four of her races this preparation and looks awfully hard to beat here.
The Simon Miller-trained filly broke her maiden four starts ago by 4.3 lengths before taking out a Class 1 Handicap second-up.
She stepped up to this course and distance two starts ago and once again put her rivals away easily.
It was a case of rinse and repeat last start when dropping back to 1200m where she treated her rivals with disdain to win by just under a length.
Lucy Fiore has been aboard for every start this preparation and can give her the run of the race from barrier 2.
2 Units – Sixinch Heels (1)
Race 6 - 4:19pm AEST
One Metro Win Handicap (1200 METRES)
Ahyeahrighto (2) looks set for a bold showing third-up after two good runs to start this preparation.
The son of Harry Angel stormed home first-up over 1000m here to miss the win by a nose before fighting strongly last start despite racing three-wide the trip to finish 1.4 lengths fourth.
He’ll appreciate the rise to 1200m and is a previous winner over the course and distance, claiming a narrow win last preparation.
He’s drawn well for Brad Parnham who should land in a prominent position.
1 Unit – Ahyeahrighto (2)
Race 7 - 5:00pm AEST
G2 KARRAKATTA PLATE (1200 METRES)
Yes Queen (8) looks primed for a massive performance in the G2 Karrakatta Plate.
The Dion Luciani-trained daughter of Yes Yes Yes finished second as a red hot favourite first-up in the Listed Supremacy Stakes.
Drawing an outside barrier last start in the G3 Gimcrack Stakes as she was forced to settle a long last but despite that she savaged the line to finish a nose second to Talkanco.
She’ll strip fitter third-up and draws to get a much better run for William Pike.
2 Units – Yes Queen (8)
Race 8 - 5:45pm AEST
THE QUOKKA (1200 METRES)
Overpass (1) returns to Western Australia looking to win his third consecutive The Quokka.
The Bjorn Baker-trained gelding loves racing Ascot having won all four of his previous starts over this course and distance, which includes the past two editions of The Quokka and the G1 Winterbottom Stakes.
He arrives in great form having given Briasa an almighty fight in the G1 TJ Smith Stakes where he was run down in the shadows of the post to finish a head second.
While there’s no doubting he does his best work fresh, he has run well second-up in the past including a half-length second in the G1 Ladbrokes Doomben 10,000.
Josh Parr has a terrific relationship with the gelding who is thrown in at the weights and should be able to cross and lead.
2 Units – Overpass (1)
Race 9 - 6:25pm AEST
THE JOEY (1200 METRES)
Twain’s Angel (13) has been freshened since winning the City Of Belmont – Marjorie Charleson Classic over this course and distance seven weeks ago.
The Sean & Jake Casey-trained mare loves this course and distance and has only been defeated once in three first-up races and that was last preparation when suffering from an elevated heart rate.
She looks set for a bold showing based on how stylish she looked in a recent trial when cruising to the line for a close second to Western Empire.
Madi Derrick can give her the run of the race from the inside gate.
1 Unit Each Way – Twain’s Angel (13)
Race 10 - 7:05pm AEST
One Metro Win Handicap (1500 METRES)
Boussac (10) has not run a bad race this preparation and looks very close to winning.
The Meryl Hayley-trained gelding was caught three-wide the trip last start over this course and distance yet still fought bravely to finish just under a length fourth.
In his three runs prior to that this time in work, he finished no further back than 1.4 lengths.
Troy Turner takes the ride and should be able to give him every opportunity from the kind draw.
1 Unit – Boussac (10)
