2026 Queensland Derby Day Preview

2026 Queensland Derby Day Preview

This Saturday, Stradbroke Season moves to Eagle Farm for Queensland Derby Day, one of the marquee meetings of the carnival.

A nine-race program awaits, with seven black-type contests showcasing the depth and quality of racing on offer, headlined by the Group 1 Queensland Derby where the staying three-year-olds step up to the ultimate test over 2400m.

At the time of writing, the track was rated a Soft 5 prior to Wednesday’s heavy rainfall, which is likely to have pushed conditions into the heavy range. With further showers forecast on Thursday but improving weather into Friday and Saturday, the surface should begin to recover, potentially edging back toward the soft range by race day.

The Group 1 Ladbrokes Kingsford Smith Cup adds further star power to the meeting and shapes as one of the strongest editions in recent memory, bringing together an elite field of sprinters in a race that could have major ramifications for the remainder of the carnival.

From emerging stayers chasing their breakthrough at the top level to seasoned sprinters clashing in a high-pressure Group 1, the program offers quality from top to bottom.

Now it’s time to dive in, nine races, plenty of angles, and hopefully a few winners to be found.

Race 1 – DRINKWISE BENCHMARK 85 Handicap (1400 METRES)
No. 16 Bengal Diamond
Each Way

BENGAL DIAMOND (16) has come back from a short break in great form and finally draws a decent barrier.

The Adam Campton-trained mare went within a whisker of opening her campaign with a win over 1200m here before showing plenty of fight last start in the Listed Silk Stocking at the Gold Coast where despite working early from the outside gate, she fought gamely to finish 1.37 lengths third.

She’ll strip fitter third-up and won her only previous race over this course and distance.

From barrier 4, Ben Thompson should be able to give her a sweet run just behind what looks like a decent speed.

Race 2 – KILCOY GLOBAL FOODS BENCHMARK 85 Handicap (1000 METRES)
No. 4 Lyles

LYLES (4) resumes here, looking to pick up where he left off after a strong run of form last preparation that saw him win three races in a row.

One of those wins included a 2.28 length victory over this course and distance where he settled second before dashing clear to salute in track record time.

The Matthew Smith-trained gelding looks primed for a bold first-up showing following three trials which included a strong win in his most recent piece of work.

Top hoop James McDonald has been booked to ride and will race on speed and give them something to catch.

Race 3 – GROUP 3 LIVING TURF PREMIER’S CUP (2400 METRES)
No. 9 Highland Bling
Each Way

HIGHLAND BLING (9) returns from a seven-week let-up after a super performance in the Group 1 Sydney Cup.

The Phillip Stokes-trained gelding is a true stayer and never gave up over the two-mile contest, finishing just over a half-length third to Changingoftheguard.

That followed two heart-breaking seconds in the Group 2 Adelaide Cup and Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes where he was nailed in the final stride on both occasions.

A recent trial will have tuned him up nicely and he gets in on the minimum weight for Ben Thompson.

Race 4 – GROUP 2 THE STRAIGHT SIRES’ PRODUCE (1400 METRES)
No. 2 Blind Raise
Tip of The Day

BLIND RAISE (2) arrives in Queensland in ripping form and is looking to remain undefeated.

The Busuttin & Young-trained gelding let down powerfully over this distance on the Sandown Lakeside track to win in dominant fashion.

He then showed plenty of dash when proving too strong for his rivals in an on speed display in the Listed ANZAC Day Stakes at Flemington.

That was a month ago, so he has had a tick over jump out over this way of going which produced a pleasing piece of work.

Nash Rawiller will look to settle in a prominent position.

Race 5 – GROUP 3 LORD MAYOR’S CUP (1800 METRES)
No. 4 Tavi Time

TAVI TIME (4) returns to Brisbane looking to go one better in the Group 3 Lord Mayor’s Cup after finishing second in this race last year.

The Kris Lees-trained gelding was a sick watch for his backers last start in the Listed Scone Cup where he never got a crack at them in the straight and went to the line like a coiled cobra for a 2.21 length sixth.

He has followed a similar path to last year and arrives here in peak condition.

While he won’t want it too wet, he boasts an excellent record on Soft going and just needs clear air to be fighting out the finish.

Race 6 – GROUP 3 MULLINS LAWYERS FRED BEST CLASSIC (1400 METRES)
No. 7 Estremo
Each Way

This is one of the strongest fields I’ve seen assembled in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic, so it’s sure to be a cracking affair!

With the openness of the race in mind, ESTREMO (7) looks like an excellent chance and over the odds.

The Chris Waller-trained colt was outstanding last start over 1350m at Doomben where he sprinted hard and fast off a slow speed to easily put his rivals away by 1.24 lengths.

He showed his quality during the Spring Carnival when winning the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude.

Blinkers go on for the first time which should see James McDonald settling in a prominent position.

Race 7 – GROUP 1 SKY RACING QUEENSLAND DERBY (2400 METRES)
No. 4 Providence

PROVIDENCE (4) ran a big race last start in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate, which should serve as a springboard into the Group 1 Queensland Derby.

The Chris Waller-trained colt settled back and was never closer than three-wide in the run but still fought bravely to finish 1.44 lengths third.

He was four weeks between runs after finishing a close second in the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate two starts ago, so will have come on nicely.

12 furlongs won’t faze him, given he found the line strongly after being held up when finishing fifth in the Group 1 Victoria Derby during the Spring Carnival.

It’s a positive sign that James McDonald takes the ride on this guy when Waller has four runners in the field.

Race 8 – GROUP 1 LADBROKES KINGSFORD SMITH CUP (1300 METRES)
No. 7 Transatlantic
Each Way

TRANSATLANTIC (7) returned in great order and looks well placed to run a race at odds in the Group 1 Ladbrokes Kingsford Smith Cup.

The Tony Gollan-trained gelding kicked off his Ladbrokes Stradbroke Handicap campaign with a solid 2.46 length fourth in the Group 2 Victory Stakes.

He’ll love the rise in distance and boasts an impressive second-up record of three wins from five starts.

The son of Snitzel had an outstanding last preparation that included the Group 1 Toorak Handicap.

There doesn’t look to be a great deal of speed in the race which should see Ryan Maloney land in a prominent position.

Race 9 – LISTED MAGIC MILLIONS HELEN COUGHLAN STAKES (1200 METRES)
No. 10 Poster Girl
Each Way

POSTER GIRL (10) had a few things against her first-up in the Listed Bright Shadow but still produced a top performance.

The Chris & Corey Munce-trained mare wasn’t suited by the short 1110m and raced three-deep from the wide barrier but still found the line strongly to finish 2.61 lengths third.

She’ll appreciate the rise in distance and boasts a record of two wins and second to Storm Boy from three starts over this course and distance.

Martin Harley has a good relationship with her and will give her every chance from barrier 3.
