Frank Packer Plate Tips
Frank Packer Plate tips including backing any proven Group 3 staying types from the local Sydney stables and those with a previous victory over the 2000m distance or further.
From 2018 – 2026 trainer Chris Waller prepared four of the eight winners, most recently Osipenko (2023), so backing the Waller-trained three-year-olds in the event is another good Frank Packer Plate betting tip.
Gai Waterhouse however holds the record having trained seven Frank Packer Plate winners, most recently Fat Al (2012) and Shangri La Spring (2025) who she trained in partnership with Adrian Bott. Her runner Gold Bullion was also first past the post in the 2024 edition but eventually lost on protest to Kintyre.
Taking the colts and geldings is also key in Frank Packer Plate tipping as just seven fillies from 1980 have beaten home the boys with Arabian Gold (2014) followed by Verona (2022) the latest.
Backing runners drawn in single-digit barriers is another top Frank Packer tip as just one winner since 2006 has jumped from a double-digit gate – The Chosen One (11 in 2019).

The Frank Packer Plate is a Group 3 race for three-year-olds run and won at Royal Randwick on All Aged Stakes Day in mid-April.

The final feature race meet of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, the day is headlined by the Group 1 $1,500,000 All Aged Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 $1,000,000 Champagne Stakes (1600m). Other key support races on the card include the: Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m), Group 3 JRA Plate (2000m), and the Frank Packer Plate.
Run over 2000m at set weights, the event offers $250,000 in prize money as of 2024, and the race often attracts graduates out of the Australian Derby and or the Australian Oaks.
The Frank Packer Plate was first held in 1980 and is named in honour of media mogul and former committeeman of the Australian Jockey Club, Sir Douglas Frank Hewson Packer.
The race gained Group 3 status in 1991 and has been won by many nice horses including most famously Might And Power (1997) who went on to complete that year’s Caulfield Cup – Melbourne Cup double and win a host of other elite level races including the 1998 Cox Plate.
It also serves as a nice lead-up into the Group 1 $1 million Queensland Derby (2400m) held the following month in Brisbane. Shootoff (2011) was the last galloper to complete the Frank Packer Plate – Queensland Derby race double.
In 2024 Kintyre won the Frank Packer Plate on protest before a next-up victory in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) at Eagle Farm.

Frank Packer Plate Betting
Frank Packer Plate betting markets are led by in-form autumn three-year-olds looking to finish off their campaigns in Sydney with a Black-Type win before a possible trip to Brisbane over the winter.
Runners with previous experience in Group 3 or higher company that campaign, especially any graduates dropping in grade and distance from a run in the ATC Derby or ATC Oaks, often dominate Frank Packer Plate odds.
There have been a number of upsets in recent years including in 2021 when Senor Toba won at Frank Packer Plate odds of $26 and the following year with the filly Verona causing a boil-over at $21.
There was also an upset in 2025 with Shangri La Spring winning at Frank Packer odds of $16.
Osipenko ($1.95 in 2023) and Matias ($2.70 in 2026) are the latest favourites in Frank Packer Plate betting to win.
Frank Packer Plate Field
Horses in the Frank Packer Plate race field may come via a host of different lead-up races including even the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) run a fortnight before on Day 1 of The Championships. The Chosen One (4th in 2019) was the last Frank Packer Plate winner to come off a lead-up run in the Australian Derby.
Another good lead-up held on the same day as the Derby is the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m). In 2020 Entente won the Carbine Club Stakes before a Frank Packer third. That form was franked the following spring with Entente also running second to Montefilia in the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m).
Six horses have completed Sydney’s Carbine Club Stakes – Frank Packer Plate double with He’s Our Rokkii (2016), Hi World (2015), Fat Al (2012), Mr Piper (1996), Juggler (1995), and Espinosa (1994).
In 2024 the Frank Packer Plate was won by Kintyre – 3rd the start prior in the Carbine Club Stakes – after a successful protest.
Shangri La Spring (4th in 2025) and Matias (3rd in 2026) are the last Carbine Club Stakes graduates to continue on and win the Frank Packer Plate.
The 2023 Frank Packer Plate winner Osipenko came off a lead-up sixth against the older horses in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m).
The better graduates out of the Frank Packer Plate field are usually Brisbane-bound for the winter and next-up options include the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) at Doomben in mid-May and the Group 1 Queensland Derby over the mile and a half at Eagle Farm.

Frank Packer Plate nominations close on the Monday before the race with final acceptances taken on the Wednesday.
