JESSICA PEGULA VS COCO GAUFF

The first Wimbledon women’s quarterfinal is an all-American affair with fourth seed Jessica Pegula taking on seventh seed Coco Gauff.

Pegula leads the head-to-head 5-3, winning their most recent clash at last year’s WTA Finals after Gauff won their Wuhan Open final showdown. They are one-all on grass – Gauff winning at the 2023 Eastbourne International and Pegula at the 2024 Berlin Open.

Searching for her first Wimbledon semifinal appearance, Pegula beat Darja Vidmanova, Sara Sorribes Tormo and Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in straight sets, before fighting back eliminate 16th seed Iva Jovic 4-6 6-3 6-1.

Two-time slam winner Gauff has reached the last eight at Wimbledon for the first time after a first-round demolition of Tamara Korspatch, and three straight three-set battles against Soalna Sierra, Claire Liu and 11th seed Belinda Bencic.

Pegula has certainly been the more consistent of the two so far – as is her trademark – but Gauff’s ceiling remains higher and her fighting qualities have dragged her out of some tight spots. Expect a lengthy baseline battle with Gauff a tempting $2.20 outsider.

Prediction: BACK OVER 22.5 TOTAL GAMES @ $1.87

NAOMI OSAKA VS KAROLINA MUCHOVA

New tournament favourite Naomi Osaka is looking to reverse a recent result against 10th seed Karolina Muchova in her first Wimbledon quarterfinal

The pair met in the Bad Homburg Open final less than a fortnight ago, with Osaka retiring at 6-1 1-0 down. That levelled up the rivalry at three-all after Osaka had won their Australian Open and US Open encounters last year.

Four-time major champion Osaka, seeded 14th here, has progressed past the third round at Wimbledon for the first time by thrashing Elsa Jacquemot, Anastasia Gasanova, Daria Kasatkina and Aryna Sabalenka.

The 6-2 7-5 defeat of world No.1 Sabalenka was a cut above anything produced by any player in the tournament so far.

Muchova marched through the early rounds in similar fashion – beating Anastasia Zakharova, Zhang Shuai and Manachaya Sawangkaew in straight sets – before outlasting 2024 champion Barbora Krejcikova 7-5 5-7 6-3.

The French Open runner-up in 2023, Muchova lost her two previous Wimbledon quarterfinals but has made the semis of both hard-court slams. Her varied shots and net game provide a different challenge for Osaka.

But Osaka is the personification of a confidence player – and it’s sky-high right now. She is 5-0 in grand slam quarterfinals, and the end of a five-year major drought is firming.

Prediction: BACK OSAKA TO WIN @ $1.77

JANNIK SINNER VS JAN-LENNARD STRUFF

Jannik Sinner’s bid for back-to-back Wimbledon titles moves on to a quarterfinal showdown with giant-killing, history-making veteran Jan-Lennard Struff.

Sinner has won all three of his matches against Struff to date – all during 2024 – but their grass-court clash at the Halle Open went to a third-set tiebreak.

World No.1 Sinner survived a five-set scare in the first round against Miomir Kecmanovic, but has since cruised past Nuno Borges, Jenson Brooksby and Shintaro Mochizuki without dropping a set.

The 36-year-old Struff has powered into his maiden grand slam quarterfinal in remarkable style. Ranked 74th, he has overcome Sebastian Baez, 28th seed Brandon Nakashima and Hubert Hurkacz in five-setters, while he eliminated eighth seed Daniil Medvedev in straight sets.

Struff rallied from two sets down against big-serving Hurkacz in the Round of 16. He’s the oldest player to reach a major quarterfinal for the first time.

Sinner is just $1.03 to progress – and it would not surprise if Struff runs out of steam after his string of marathon encounters (even the match against Medvedev last almost three hours). But Sinner’s biggest winning margin so far is seven games and Struff will leave it all out on the court.

Prediction: BACK STRUFF TO COVER THE GAMES HANDICAP (+7.5) @ $2.00

FELIX AUGER-ALIASSIME VS NOVAK DJOKOVIC

A massive quarterfinal encounter awaits third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime and seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic.

The duo has only met twice – both during 2022, with Djokovic winning at the Rome Masters and Auger-Aliassime prevailing at the Laver Cup.

A quarterfinalist back in 2021, Auger-Aliassime has reached the last eight with straight-sets wins over Alexander Shevchenko, Dino Prizmic and Michael Zheng, before emerging victorious in a five-set war with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Seventh seed Djokovic beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets in the second round, while his other three wins against Yibing Wu, Arthur Rinderknech and Roman Safiullin required four sets.

The 39-year-old has made at least the semis of the past seven Wimbledons and has won an amazing 23 of his last 25 grand slam quarterfinals. Expect his superior return game to be the difference as he keeps his quest of equalling Roger Federer’s Wimbledon record afloat.

Prediction: SGM – BACK DJOKOVIC TO WIN AND AUGER-ALIASSIME TO WIN A SET @ $2.19
