Prior to being a Group 1, it was won by the likes of Black Caviar, Buffering, Miss Andretti, and Apache Cat. They are four of the biggest names in the sprinting ranks to ever grace the track, which makes the AJ Moir Stakes a must-watch race.
Since getting awarded top status, it has been taken out by the likes of Buffering, who is a three-time winner, Nature Strip, and Kiwi champion Imperatriz, who scored an exciting win at Moonee Valley.
Notable AJ Moir Stakes Winners
We have looked at the recent AJ Moir Stakes results, but looking further back adds more intrigue.
The race has been won by Australia’s greatest sprinters, including Schillaci, Manikato, and Placid Ark. They have races named in their honour now, including the Group 1 Manikato Stakes.
Some of our favourite horses have won the AJ Moir Stakes, including Our Egyptian Raine, Spinning Hill, and Falvelon, who were three of the most exciting sprinters at the turn of the century.
Black Caviar won in consecutive years, and she would attract a huge audience at Moonee Valley. She remained unbeaten during her career, and she’s one of the most famous AJ Moir Stakes past winners.
AJ Moir Stakes History
The AJ Moir Stakes was first run in 1976, and it was named the AJ Moir Stakes until 1995 before Schweppes took over sponsorship of the race.
However, it returned to the AJ Moir Stakes in 2012, and became a Group 1 contest the following year. That wasn’t surprising given the quality of the field every year, and we’re surprised that it took that long to upgrade.
Buffering has the most wins with three, and jockey Damien Oliver rode the most winners with four, kicking off with Schillaci in 1992 and ending with Apache Cat in 2009.
Angus Armanasco and Bruce McLachlan trained four winners each.
