Last year’s US Open runner-up, Amanda Anisimova, lines up against rising teenager Lilli Tagger in the second round.
Tagger has been one of the big movers on the WTA Tour this season after reaching a maiden WTA final at the Jiangxi Open in late 2025. She cracked the top 50 by winning the Prague Open in July, including a win over Barbora Krejcikova in the semis.
The 18-year-old chalked up a maiden grand slam victory by beating Tamara Korspatch 6-0 7-5 in the first round here.
Tenth seed Anisimova, meanwhile, crushed Ashlyn Krueger 6-1 6-3. She had a solid lead-in to the US Open, reaching the last 16 at the Canadian Masters and the quarterfinals in Cincinnati, losing to fellow top-10 players at both and beating Alex Eala and Linda Noskova at the latter.
So far this year, Anisimova hasn’t reached the heights of her 2025 breakout efforts – two grand slam finals and two WTA 1000 titles – and on first-round form she should be too strong for a tyro who doesn’t have much experience against players of her calibre.

Aussie hope Maya Joint runs into top-10 star Elina Svitolina in her quest to reach the third round of a major for the first time at the US Open.
Twenty-year-old Joint has reached the second round at Flushing Meadows for the third straight year, producing an outstanding comeback to sink Liudmila Samsonova 3-6 6-2 6-2.
Joint, ranked 72nd, had gone down to Samsonova in the third round of the Canadian Masters.
Svitolina demolished Solana Sierra 6-1 6-2 in the first round.
A semifinalist at the US Open back in 2019, veteran Svitolina has been right among the top slam contenders in 2026. She made the Australian Open semis and French Open quarters, before suffering a shock first-round loss at Wimbledon.
Svitolina also reached the Dubai Championships final and won the Rome Masters earlier this year, while her North American swing has featured a semifinal run at the Canadian Masters.
Though capable of jagging an upset, Joint is 0-6 against top-10 players and Svitolina already looks locked in. Joint showed enough in the first round to consider backing her with a hefty start, however.

US Open dark horse Ben Shelton confronts a formidable second-round assignment in the shape of former top-10 force Hubert Hurkacz.
Eighth seed Shelton was slow out of the blocks in the first round against Tallon Griekspoor but found his groove eventually in a 1-6 6-1 7-6 6-2 victory.
Shelton reached the US Open semis in 2023, while he warmed up for this tilt by winning his second straight Canadian Masters title.
Big-serving Hurkacz has never been past the second round in New York. But after an injury-ravaged run he’s climbed back into the top 50, beating seeds Casper Ruud and Tommy Paul at Wimbledon.
The Polish veteran’s hard-court build-up has been relatively modest, but he saw off Damir Dzumhur 6-4 4-6 6-1 6-1 in the first round on Monday. Giving up five services games was a bit looser than Hurkacz needs to be, however.
Shelton has been eliminated before the third round of a hard-court slam just once – on debut at the 2022 US Open – and has enough recent form on the board against quality opponents to back with confidence in this one.
Prediction: BACK SHELTON TO COVER THE SET HANDICAP (-1.5) @ $1.83
Australia’s Alexei Popyrin has advanced to a second-round US Open date with world No.28 Alejandro Tabilo.
Popyrin won their only previous clash – a straight-sets win at the 2025 French Open – but he was seeded 25th at the time. He is currently ranked 130th.
The 27-year-old produced his best performance in some time, however, to rally from a set down and eliminate cast-iron veteran Grigor Dimitrov 3-6 6-3 6-2 6-4. Popyrin reached the fourth round of the US Open in 2024 on the back of his Canadian Masters triumph.
Tabilo is attempting to get to the third round of the US Open for the first time. He successfully navigated a tricky first-round assignment, outlasting Yannick Hanfmann 6-3 6-2 6-7 6-3.
Though a definite clay specialist, Tabilo does have a couple of hard-court titles to his name. But with a spring back in his step and a decent 9-6 record at the US Open, Popyrin appeals as a slight outsider.
