Lebanon vs France kicks off at 5:40pm AEDT on Sunday 1 November at CommBank Stadium in Sydney. Here’s our Round 3 prediction, plus the best bets and odds at Ladbrokes.
Lebanon and France get the opportunity to finish off the World Cup with a morale-boosting win.
FORM: Lebanon followed up a 42-18 loss to the Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby with a spirited 36-0 defeat to Tonga in Sydney, with the scoreline blowing out courtesy of three tries in the last 12 minutes.
It’s been a torrid expedition Down Under for France, pummelled 78-4 by Samoa and 82-0 by England – despite holding the latter scoreless until the 22nd minute.
INS AND OUTS: Joseph Nohra comes in for injured Lebanon five-eighth Khaled Rajab and Moustafa Dirani will line up at hooker.
Souths centre Latrell Siegwalt is out with a shoulder injury, so Guillermo Aispuro-Bichet comes into France’s backline. Leo Darrelatour is on a wing and Cesar Rouge returns at five-eighth with Thomas Lacans moving to halfback and Theo Fages going to the bench. Alrix Da Costa will start at hooker.
KEY MATCH-UP: Rival captains and No.13s Alex Twal and Benjamin Garcia will look to set the tone for their respective teams.
HISTORY: Lebanon has a 4-1 record against France, winning all four clashes since going down in their inaugural encounter in 1999. They last met at the 2017 World Cup in Canberra, with Mitch Moses steering the Cedars to a 29-18 win.
KEY STAT: France has not won a Test against a nation competing at this World Cup since 2013.
VERDICT: Lebanon can take heart from their two losses so far, showing plenty of fight defensively against PNG and Tonga despite fielding a team light on NRL players.
France, meanwhile, has been utterly steamrolled aside from offering some early resistance against England.
The Cedars should be too strong in this one with Twal, Jacob Kiraz, Jason Saab and Alex Conti leading the way.
