New Zealand and Fiji meet in Round 3 at Cbus Super Stadium on the Gold Coast on Saturday 31 October, kicking off at 3:30pm AEDT. Our New Zealand vs Fiji prediction and best bets are below.
It’s a straight shootout for a semifinal spot – and Fiji’s recent World Cup record against the Kiwis, along with last week’s statement showing, suggests this will be anything but straightforward for the heavyweights.
FORM: The Kiwis backed up their unfortunate 24-22 loss to the Kangaroos with an 82-16 cruise against Cook Islands in Christchurch – though there were some early jitters as the Kukis scored three tries in eight minutes to lead 16-12.
Jamayne Isaako racked up 38 points from three tries and 13 goals, while Casey McLean, Ronaldo Mulitalo and Tanner Stowers-Smith notched doubles.
A first-half onslaught carried Fiji to a 40-12 win over Cook Islands in week one, but the Bati produced arguably the surprise showing of the tournament last Sunday in a gallant 36-22 loss to Australia. They led 16-12 early in the second half while five-eighth Kurt Donoghoe was a resounding man of the match.
INS AND OUTS: The Kiwis have reverted to their widely-accepted best line-up, with Dane Gagai, Moses Leota and Isaiah Papali’i returning to the starting side. Keano Kini stays at fullback with Kalyn Ponga sidelined.
Bayleigh Bentley-Hape’s injury sees Sunia Turuva move to fullback and Ronald Philitoga come in on the wing. Young prop Emosi Ravosai replaces the suspended Mitchell Prest in the starting line-up.
KEY MATCH-UP: Diminutive fullbacks Kini and Turuva are potential game-breakers but also have an error in them, so they will be obvious targets for their respective opposition. Expect plenty of high balls to come both No.1s’ way. Kini has the higher upside as an attacking fullback.
HISTORY: The nations’ only clashes were at the past two World Cups. Fiji produced an all-time boilover to beat New Zealand 4-2 in the 2017 quarterfinal in Wellington, while the Kiwis got out of jail in a 24-18 thriller at the same stage of the 2022 tournament – leading for the first time in the last 10 minutes.
KEY STAT: Fiji has covered the line in its last six World Cup matches.
VERDICT: New Zealand and Fiji square off for a semifinal spot for the third straight World Cup – and the Bati’s herculean showing against Australia with only half a team of NRL-level players will have the favourites a touch nervous given how their 2017 and 2022 showdowns unfolded.
Dongohoe and Brandon Wakeham have been outstanding in the halves for Fiji and the pack punched above its station last week, but the Kiwis’ vaunted engine-room should prove the difference and create ample opportunities for a firing backline.
Nevertheless, the line in this one is utterly disrespectful to Fiji, who are highly likely to make life uncomfortable once again for the Kiwis.
