Michael Freedman’s son of the stable’s former Golden Slipper winner Stay Inside, Incognito ($5) was excellent on debut quickening well with 200m to go displaying a lovely turn of foot off a run three-wide. The $1 million colt moved up and went past the front runners to secure a narrow victory in the 2025 Breeders’ Plate results and become the first two-year-old winner of the season off a well-timed Tommy Berry ride.

Breeders’ Plate Tips

Good Breeders’ Plate tips to consider include looking for two-year-olds coming off a trial win, those drawn favourably, and the local Sydney-trained juveniles.

Those on debut have dominated the Breeders’ Plate results so tipping the debutants from the strong local stables is key when doing your Breeders’ Plate tipping.

2025 Breeders’ Plate Tips

Our Ladbrokes’ insider Breeders’ Plate 2025 betting tips and Randwick racing selections will be detailed below the week of the race so bookmark this page for the young sprinters to get behind at the best price this season.

To Win: No. 2 Eviction Notice

EVICTION NOTICE (2) is the favourite and market mover for the Breeders’ Plate and based on his dominant lead-up trial win I think he can salute on debut for the punters. This Stay Inside colt hails from the stables of Waterhouse & Bott who are guns with youngsters, and he put the writing on the wall at the Kensington track when flying over 850m to win his hit out by nearly eight lengths. Will easily get the 1000m, drawn a treat in a small field and has Tim Clark sticking aboard after he rode him in that enormous trial. Looks to have speed in spades and shapes up as the one to beat.

The Breeders’ Plate is a Group 3 race conducted at Royal Randwick Racecourse on Epsom Handicap Day each Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.

The meeting is traditionally held on either the final Saturday in September or first in October and is headlined by the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m). The Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) for Spring Cups-bound stayers and Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) for the fillies are the other elite level races on the card.

The Everest hopefuls are also on display in the Group 2 $1 million Premiere Stakes (1200m).

The Breeders’ Plate, previously a Listed race, gained its current Group 3 status in 2018 and currently offers $250,000 in prize money.

The 1000m, set weights sprint is open only to two-year-old colts and geldings.

The Breeders’ Plate, along with the Group 3 Gimcrack Stakes for the fillies held on the same day, are the first two-year-old races of the racing season in New South Wales.

Two-year-olds out of the Breeders’ Plate often head towards the $1 million Golden Gift later in the spring with Sejardan (2021) the last to do the double.

Horses out of the Breeders’ Plate often return the following autumn to target the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m).

North England (3rd in 2024) was the last Breeders’ Plate graduate to go on and win the Golden Gift.

Breeders’ Plate Betting

Breeders’ Plate odds favour two-year-olds with any past trial experience that have performed well in hit-outs leading up to the event.

Local Sydney-trained youngsters often sit high up the Breeders’ Plate betting markets especially those prepared by the Waterhouse stable, Chris Waller, or Team Snowden who all have multiple victories in the event in recent years.

In 2023 Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott ran the Breeders’ Plate trifecta led by Espionage ($7.50).

Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott repeated the feat in 2024 preparing all three runners in the Breeders’ Plate trifecta again led by King Kirk ($8).

Favourites in Breeders’ Plate betting have a poor recent strike-rate so laying the top elect is a good tip.

Breeders’ Plate Field

The Breeders’ Plate race field attracts the season’s most promising two-year-old sprinters.

Many of the juveniles in the Breeders’ Plate are on debut and recently Performer (2017), Dubious (2018), Global Quest (2019), Shaquero (2020), Sejardan (2021), Empire Of Japan (2022), Espionage (2023), and Incognito (2025) all won the event at their first career starts.

Horses in the Breeders’ Plate field may return in the autumn to contest the world’s richest race for two-year-olds, the Group 1 $5 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m).

Eight horses have to date completed the Breeders’ Plate – Golden Slipper double: Sky High (1959/60, Eskimo Prince (1963/64), Baguette (1969/70), Luskin Star (1976/77), Sebring (2007/08), Pierro (2011/12), Vancouver (2014/15), and most recently Capitalist (2015/16).

The Breeders’ Plate nominations are taken the Monday before the race runs on the Saturday with the final field of acceptances and barriers out on the Wednesday followed by the odds opening at bookmakers around the country.
