Jockey Tommy Berry timed his run to perfection in the 2025 Golden Pendant peeling wide around the home bend on the eventual Michael Freedman trained winner Manaal ($3.50) to get the last start Group 2 Sheraco Stakes winning mare into a lovely position before extending to hit the line a length clear of the fighting Gerringong. Freedman is now looking at either the $1 million Silver Eagle on The Everest Day (October 18) or wait for the $2 million The Invitation race for the in-form daughter of Tassort.

Her autumn form was elite, including a Group 2 Millie Fox victory over Dark Glitter and a runner-up finish to Lady Shenandoah in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic. The Golden Pendant is a Group 2 race for fillies and mares held at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in late September during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival. The race was formerly known as the Research Stakes and is run over 1400m on the same day as the season’s gun three-year-olds face off in the Group 1 $1 million Golden Rose Stakes (1400m).
The Golden Pendant is one of the key support events on the Golden Rose Day card along with the Group 2 Shannon Stakes and the Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality for stayers.
The event offers a lucrative $400,000 in total prize money and is run at set weights plus penalties. It has been won by some quality mares over the years including eight-time Group 1 champion More Joyous (2012).
The Golden Pendant now also serves as a potential lead-up for mares looking for an invite to contest the $2 million The Invitation race at Randwick in October.
In 2022 the Golden Pendant winner Nimalee went on to run third in that year’s The Invitation results.
Espiona (2023) is the last mare to complete the Golden Pendant – The Invitation race double.

Espiona (2nd in 2023) Makarena (4th in 2024) are other recent Sheraco Stakes graduates to win the Golden Pendant.

Catkins ran second in the 2014 Golden Pendant and third in the Myer Classic that year. In 2013 the Golden Pendant winner Sharnee Rose finished fourth in Crown Oaks, won by that season’s Golden Pendant runner-up Red Tracer.
