The Everest Winners & Placegetters

The Everest is the world’s richest turf race, and there have been some standout winners since its inception in 2017. It pays to know past winners from a betting standpoint, as betting trends are key to picking winners, especially at the top level of Australian racing.

The winning odds range from $2 to $21, so it’s not just a favorite’s race. However, all but one of the past The Everest winners has paid less than $10, so when looking at history’s The Everest winners, it’s good to see which price range is more commonly winning the feature sprint at Randwick.

We look at the past Everest winners, which will help punters pick the winner in the upcoming editions of The Everest.

2025 Everest Results

The Everest 2025 result was one for the ages, with Ka Ying Rising becoming the first international winner of the $20 million race.

1st: No. 1 Ka Ying Rising
2nd: No. 12 Tempted
3rd: No. 4 Jimmysstar
4th: No.3 Overpass

The Hong Kong champion was too good for the Everest field, winning by 1.2 lengths over a fast-finishing Tempted. With only 3.9 lengths covering the entire field, it was one of the more even races in recent history.

List of The Everest Winners by Year

The Everest was first run in 2017, and there have been nine winners in total starting with Redzel who won the inaugural Everest before going back-to-back with a successful title defence in 2018 to become the first – and to date only – dual The Everest champion.

Below is a list of all Everest winners at Royal Randwick, including trainer, jockey, barrier, and odds, which are all crucial when making your Everest picks.

List of Multiple The Everest Winners

Redzel is the only dual-Everest winner, having won the first two editions in 2017 and 2018. The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained gelding paid $8.50 in both races with final field betting, collecting some serious prize money for connections and slot holders.

List of the Most Successful The Everest Winning Jockeys

Two jockeys have more than one win in Everest history. It’s a tough race to win, as the 1200m distance at Randwick is hectic. However, the senior riders, as this list shows, typically stand up to the pressure best.

Craig Williams has two of the last three Everest winners with Bella Nipotina and Giga Kick. Kerrin McEvoy won the first two editions on board Redzel, before winning with Classique Legend in 2020.

  • Craig Williams (2024, 2022)

Zac Purton aboard Hong Kong trained Ka Ying Rising in 2025 is the latest The Everest winning jockey.

List of the Most Successful The Everest Winning Trainers

Chris Waller and Peter and Paul Snowden have two wins apiece in The Everest. They are the best trainers in Racing NSW, so it comes as no surprise. Waller won with enigmatic sprinter Nature Strip, which came two years following an upset win with 3YO colt Yes Yes Yes.

  • Peter & Paul Snowden (2017, 2018)

The Hong Kong based David Hayes is the latest The Everest winning trainer having prepared the favourite Ka Ying Rising for victory in 2025.

Famous The Everest Winners

It takes a good horse to win the richest turf race, and with The Everest being a grand final for many sprinters, it often brings out the best in the thoroughbreds. There have been some famous winners, most notably Redzel, who went back-to-back as an Everest winner in 2018, and Hong Kong superstar Ka Ying Rising who won in 2025 as the world’s highest-rated sprinter.

Ka Ying Rising (2025)

Ka Ying Rising is arguably the most famous Everest winner in history. The Hong Kong runner came to Australia with the weight of the world on his shoulders, and despite drifting from a low price of $1.50, punters got $2.05 at start time.

It was a great price for the world’s best sprinter, and he never gave the opposition a chance. Jockey Zac Purton settled just off the speed in the clear, and after a few worrying signs halfway down the straight, he put them away, eased down on the line.

The massive crowd at Randwick was cheering on the champion, and it created a unique atmosphere. By all accounts, Ka Ying Rising will be back in 2026 to defend his title.

Redzel (2018)

No one knew what to expect in 2017 when Redzel emerged victorious at the Australian Turf Club. However, winning the first two races was a feat that might never be repeated.

Redzel showed that he wasn’t just a one-trick pony when scoring a gutsy win in 2018 for his connections, which included a massive syndicate. Despite winning the year prior, the tough gelding paid $8.50 off the inside draw to cash in on the big prize money, and he will forever go down in history as the first and only two-time Everest winner.

Nature Strip (2021)

All eyes were on $3.70 favourite Nature Strip ahead of the 2021 Everest, and the globetrotting superstar didn’t let punters down. He showed all of his class when winning from an outside barrier with champion jockey James McDonald in the saddle.

He had already won many Group 1 races in Australia, and although The Everest didn’t have Group 1 status in 2021, it was considered the top sprinting race. Nature Strip’s dominant win cemented his status as the best sprinter in the world, and punters rejoiced.

Bella Nipotina (2024)

She might not be the name on everyone’s lips when it comes to an Everest winner, but Bella Nipotina deserves to be on this list. She was as tough as they come, and she is the only filly or mare to win The Everest.

Despite receiving barrier 12, and drifting to $9 with bookmakers, the bonny mare put pay to the elite sprinting field, which included past winner Giga Kick, Growing Empire, I Wish I Win, and Lady of Camelot.

The $20 million race might be suited to colts and geldings, but Bella Nipotina silenced critics with a win, and she was one of the toughest in the business.

The Everest Information

The Everest is one of the first slot races to be run in the world, behind only the Pegasus World Cup. Slot holders pay $600,000 for a spot in the field, before choosing their selected Everest runner. Deals are made with the owners and the trainer of their horse, which are kept behind closed doors.

Slot holders can vary from bookmakers to stud owners, with some of the more prominent holders behind James Harron Bloodstock, Australian Turf Club, Chris Waller, and Yulong Investments.

It’s run over 1200m at Randwick in mid-October, and it was designed to draw attention away from the competing Caulfield Cup in Melbourne, which is run on the same day. It was given Group 1 status in 2025, making it a viable option for overseas thoroughbreds, of which Hong Kong’s Ka Ying Rising was the standout attraction going on to salute for slot holders the Hong Kong Jockey Club.

Betting on The Everest

We all love to back an Everest winner, and it’s a race that has built momentum since its inception in 2017. It’s no longer a novelty race, and serious punters spend months figuring out their best betting option for the Randwick sprint.

It has been a race for well-backed runners, but punters can find value. The likes of Bella Nipotina, Yes Yes Yes, and Redzel went off at around $8.50-$9, which is a value price. However, Nature Strip and Think About It were rock-solid in Everest betting markets.

Big upsets are rare, with Giga Kick being the exception, so it pays to back runners at each-way odds for the best value.

Bookmakers run promos for The Everest, so if you’re a once-a-year punter or a seasoned pro looking for a better deal, check out the Everest promotions available.
