Ladbrokes Tip: No Blue Diamond Stakes winner has run worse than second in their lead-up run in the past decade
The Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes is a lucrative Group 1 feature for two-year-olds running at Caulfield Racecourse as one of the early Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival highlights. Held on the same day as the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m), the race offers $1.5 million in prize money and is held over a 1200m sprint distance.
It is the richest juvenile’s race of the autumn and was first run in 1971 and won by Tolerance and has proved an excellent stallion and broodmare making event. The traditional lead-up is through the Blue Diamond Preludes run at the same track two weeks before on CF Orr Stakes Day.
The 2018 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes ran on Saturday February 24, 2018 .

Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes Betting & Odds
Blue Diamond Stakes betting is dominated each autumn by the two-year-olds that ran first or second in their lead-up runs in the Blue Diamond Prelude (Fillies) and Blue Diamond Prelude (Colts & Geldings).
All but one of the Blue Diamond Stakes winners from 2010 – 2018 won their lead-up race and favourites in the Blue Diamond Stakes odds have a gun record with six saluting for the punters from 2011 – 2017 including Extreme Choice (2016) and Written By (2018). The last double figure hope in Blue Diamond betting to salute was Reward For Effort ($16 in 2009) so sticking with those higher up the markets is the go historically. The boys and girls are equally favourite in Blue Diamond odds each year with fillies holding their own against the colts and geldings in recent editions of the race.
Pre-field Blue Diamond Stakes odds are open weeks out from the race before the markets firm with each round of acceptances.

Our latest Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes 2018 odds will be available and updated below over the autumn so stay tuned for the best Blue Diamond Stakes betting markets.
Blue Diamond Stakes Field
The Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes field features the season’s best two-year-olds and is run at set weights meaning the colts and geldings carry 55.5kg and the fillies 53kg. The youngsters set for the Blue Diamond Stakes field traditionally come via the Blue Diamond Preview and Blue Diamond Prelude races earlier in the autumn.
Four of the past five Blue Diamond Stakes winners (from 2014 – 2018) ran in the respective Blue Diamond Prelude lead-ups a fortnight before the Group 1 including Catchy (2017) coming off a win in the fillies’ edition to do the double, and Written By (2018) doing the same for the boys the following year. Earlier in 2016 the Blue Diamond Stakes winner Extreme Choice came off a win in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes at the track in early February.
Sydney’s Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) in April is often a nice autumn target for graduates from the Blue Diamond field. Early Blue Diamond Stakes nominations close in July the previous year followed by a number of declaration stages before the final field of acceptances is released the week of the race.
2018 Blue Diamond Stakes Field & Nominations
- Blue Diamond Stakes nominations closed in July of 2017 and featured a record 1470 early entries
- Blue Diamond Stakes first acceptances closed on Tuesday November 21, 2017
- Blue Diamond Stakes second declarations closed on Tuesday January 9, 2018 and attracted 220 hopefuls
- Blue Diamond Stakes third acceptances closed on Tuesday January 30, 2018 and left a record-equalling 84 two-year-olds
- Blue Diamond Stakes final field was announced on Tuesday February 20, 2018 and features the full 16 runners plus 4 emergencies
The official 2018 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes Final Field features a capacity line-up of smart two-year-olds. Kinky Boom and Plague Stone are early favourites in betting, but there could be value in an open edition of the classic. David Hayes chases a seventh win and second on the trot with Lindsay Park’s four runners led by Long Leaf and Enbihaar. Written By comes off the Blue Diamond C&G Prelude win and could prove value, while connections of Lady Horseowner paid the late entry to get her into the race.
The Blue Diamond Stakes 2018 Barrier Draw has been conducted and it is Darren Weir’s first ever runner in the race Native Soldier drawn the outside barrier. Lindsay Park’s BD Fillies Prelude winner Enbihaar chases the double achieved by Catchy last year, but has the second outside alley to overcome. Drawn the opposite end of the field in gate one is last weekend’s Talindert Stakes winner Prairie Fire on the quick back-up, while the C&G Prelude champ Written By is also wide out in gate 18, into 14 with emergencies out.

Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes Tips
Blue Diamond Stakes tips favour the shorter priced gallopers in the markets with favourites and single figure fancies dominating the results in the past decade. Looking for horses coming off a top two run in the Blue Diamond Prelude races and those with previous Caulfield form are also good Blue Diamond Stakes tips for punters to take.
Peter Snowden has proved a master trainer of Blue Diamond Stakes winners in recent years winning the race with Sepoy (2011), Earthquake (2014) and with Pride Of Dubai (2015) who he trained in partnership with his son Paul; looking for in-form Snowden-trained runners then is a pro tip and Blue Diamond Stakes best bet.

- 1st: #13 ENNIS HILL ($8)
- 2nd: #4 PRAIRIE FIRE ($9.50)
- 3rd: #1 LONG LEAF ($6.50)
Lindsay Park won the race last year with Catchy (2017) and return with four this autumn including fellow Fastnet Rock filly ENNIS HILL ($8) who is our tip to win. She broke her maiden status at start number two at the beginning of the month with an impressive victory in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (1000m) at the track. Only two years ago Extreme Choice did the double and this filly will get things her way from barrier four, which has produced more Blue Diamond winners than any other alley in the past 30 years. PRAIRIE FIRE ($9.50) has form around our tip running third to her in the Chairman’s before his impressive Talindert Stakes success at Flemington last weekend. Mick Price chases his third Blue Diamond win and this colt hit the line well last Saturday so can improve on the short turnaround getting out over 1200m with the inside alley to boot. LONG LEAF ($6.50) is the race favourite and a stablemate of ENNIS HILL. He is drawn well (7) and the favourites have a gun record. Could take some beating despite this being his first start at further than 1000m.
