The Auraria Stakes is a Group 3 race for three-year-old fillies run in mid-April at Morphettville Racecourse in Adelaide.
The race offers $150,000 in prize money and runs on the same day as Randwick’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes Day card in Sydney.
Contested over 1800m the staying showdown is run at set weights plus penalties.
The Auraria Stakes was first held in 1944 as a Principal race and gained its current Group 3 status in 1980 the year Kaupo won.
The event is named in honour of the 1895 Melbourne Cup winner Auraria.
From 2011 – 2020 the race was officially known as the Schweppervescence Stakes due to sponsorship purposes.
Fillies in the Auraria Stakes field are often on way to the Group 1 $1 million Australasian Oaks (2000m) held back at the track a fortnight later.
Sopressa (2018) was the last filly to complete the Auraria Stakes – Australasian Oaks double.
