Might And Power (Caulfield Stakes) 2024

Ladbrokes Tip: Runners drawn in barriers 3 – 7 have a strong record in the Caulfield Stakes (Might And Power Stakes).

The Caulfield Stakes (now run as the Might And Power) is one of three Group 1 features on the Caulfield Guineas Day card in Melbourne each October during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. It is the Caulfield Racecourse meeting’s staying feature run over 2000m under weight-for-age conditions, open to horses aged three and over.

Worth $1 million in prize money the race makes a nice lead-up into the Ladbrokes Cox Plate and was first run in 1886 and won by Isonomy.

Since then there has been many notable Caulfield Stakes winners including Wakeful (1901 & 1902), triple champ Eurythmic (1920-22), Ajax (1938), Comic Court (195), Sky High (1961 & 1962), Kingston Town (1981 & 1982), Rough Habit (1994), Lonhro (2002 & 2003), So You Think (2010), Atlantic Jewel (2013), Winx (2016), and cult horse Alligator Blood (2023).

The Caulfield Stakes horses may target other upcoming Group 1 features including the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) – now known as the VRC Champions Stakes – on the last day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival and Arcadia Queen (2020) was the last to do the double.

In 2021 the beaten Caulfield Stakes favourite, third placed Zaaki, backed-up to win the Mackinnon Stakes next-up. He also returned the following autumn and won the $5 million The All-Star Mile.

Zaaki returned to run third again in the 2022 Might And Power results behind the previous year’s Caulfield Guineas champion Anamoe before successfully defending his Champions Stakes title.

Zaaki was a late scratching from the 2023 Might And Power Stakes on race morning due to an elevated blood count.

Anamoe (2022) is the last horse to complete the Might And Power Stakes – Cox Plate double.

This season the Caulfield Stakes 2024 runs on Saturday, October 12, 2024 as the Might And Power on Caulfield Guineas Day.

Might And Power Stakes Betting

Might And Power (Caulfield Stakes) betting is at its peak the week of the race with punters looking towards the favourite as they have saluted in the race six times from 2009 – 2023 most recently with Winx (2016) and Anamoe ($2.15 in 2022).

In 2020 however the odds-on pop Russian Camelot ($1.40) went down in an upset to Arcadia Queen, with history repeating in 2021 with odds-on favourite Zaaki ($1.28) only managing to run third to the winning mare Probabeel.

Usually sitting top of the Caulfield Stakes odds are horses that ran well in their latest Group lead-up with six of the Caulfield Stakes winners from 2009-18 having finished top two in their lead-up runs including Winx (2016) who won Sydney’s Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m).

Anamoe (2022) was the last horse to complete the George Main Stakes – Might And Power interstate double.

In 2023 the George Main Stakes was renamed as the King Charles III Stakes and now takes place in Sydney on either the same day as the Might And Power Stakes or the weekend after.

Four and five year old horses also dominate the betting with just three horses since 2009 winning from outside this age group – Fawkner taking it out as a seven-year-old followed by Gailo Chop (7YO in 2017) and Alligator Blood (7O in 2023).

Might And Power Stakes Tips

Might And Power (Caulfield Stakes) tips include selecting a horse that ran first or second last time out off a Group 1 lead-up, and to look for graduates of the Underwood Stakes that has produced 10 winners since 2006 – the last to complete the double being the Kiwi Ocean Park (2012) followed by dual Underwood Stakes winner Alligator Blood (2023).

Looking for runners drawn in barrier five is a good tip as this gate has produced five winners since 2009 including Atlantic Jewel (2013) who beat home the boys in the classic on the back of an Underwood Stakes second and Gailo Chop (2017) who improved on a lead-up third in the Underwood Stakes.

In 2020 another mare won the Caulfield Stakes from barrier five with Arcadia Queen improving on her Underwood Stakes third to defeat her last start conqueror Russian Camelot.

The mares were first past the post again in 2021 with Probabeel defeating just four rivals from the inside alley.

Might And Power Stakes Field

The Might And Power (Caulfield Stakes) race field features a host of the season’s premier weight-for-age hopefuls but isn’t known for attracting bumper final acceptances.

The event ran with under 10 starters every year from 2001 – 2013 before a dozen lined-up in the 2014 field when Fawkner won. Just eight gallopers ran in the 2015 edition with Criterion got the job done first-up off a UK race, but the smallest Caulfield Stakes field was the three-starters that took to the track when Winx won in 2016.

Again in 2020 there was a diminutive field with Arcadia Queen defeating just five rivals and just five lined-up again the next year in 2021 when Probabeel scored an upset.

The 2022 Might And Power Stakes field ran with just eight runners when Anamoe won for the punters third-up, while in 2023 Alligator Blood beat nine rivals in a 10-start field.

The Caulfield Stakes field traditionally features staying types heading into another spring WFA classic – the Group 1 Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley Racecourse and recent winners of the Caulfield Stakes – Cox Plate double include Northerly (2001), So You Think (2010), Ocean Park (2012),  Winx (2016) who won the latter for the second time be a historic margin of eight lengths, and Anamoe (2022).

Might And Power Stakes Form Guide

The Might And Power (Caulfield Stakes) form guide has all the details punters need to place a well-informed wager on the weight-for-age feature with information including the saddlecloth numbers, trainers, jockeys and barriers of all the starters.

Many punters will be keen to find a Mark Kavanagh-trained runner in the mix as he’s trained three winners since 2007 with Maldivian (2007), Whobegotyou (2009) and Atlantic Jewel (2013).

Probabeel (2021), Arcadia Queen (2020) and Winx (2016) joined Atlantic Jewel as the only mares to win the Caulfield Stakes since Tristarc (1985), so punters are keen to look for the male gallopers on the form guide as well as graduates out of the Underwood Stakes.

The 2021 Caulfield Stakes form was franked with the runner-up Nonconformist going on to run second in that year’s Caulfield Cup results next start.

Anamoe franked the Might And Power Stakes 2022 form winning the Cox Plate next start as well as a host of subsequent Group 1 Sydney races the following autumn.

I’m Thunderstruck meanwhile ran second in both the 2022 Might And Power and Cox Plate results that spring, while Might And Power third-placed Zaaki went on to successfully defend his title in the 2022 Champions Mile.
