The Hawkesbury Guineas is a Group 3 race run in late April at Hawkesbury Racecourse following the action of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
Contested over 1400m and offering $200,000 in prize money, the event is open only to three-year-old runners and has held Group 3 status since 2014.
First held in 2000, the race originally ran as a handicap over1200m before increasing to its current 1400m distance and changing to set weights with penalties in 2006.
Twice the Hawkesbury Guineas has been held at Rosehill Gardens (2015, 2020).
It is held at the feature race meeting of the year for the Hawkesbury Race Club Clarendon and runs on the same day as the Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) and Group 3 Hawkesbury Crown (1300m).
The Hawkesbury Guineas has been won by a number of nice horses over the years, most famously Chautauqua (2014), a subsequent six-time Group 1 winner including his famous TJ Smith Stakes three-peat from 2015-17.

Hawkesbury Guineas Field
The Hawkesbury Guineas field attracts a quality line-up of three-year-olds, many of which may be eyeing a trip to Queensland for the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.
Potential targets across the winter for the best out of the Hawkesbury Guineas field include the Group 3 $250,000 Fred Best Classic (1400m) at Eagle Farm in late May and even the Group 1 $1.5 million Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at the same track/distance in June.
Military Zone (2019) and Dawn Passage (2020) are the last horse to complete the Hawkesbury Guineas – Fred Best Classic double. Both also ran in the Inglis Guineas between those victories, Dawn Passage successful in the Restricted feature while Military Zone ran second.
In 2022, the Godolphin-raced Vilana improved on a lead-up fifth in the Hawkesbury Guineas to win Brisbane’s Fred Best Classic next start.
Looking further ahead to the spring, the Hawkesbury Guineas graduates may have an eye on the lucrative $8 million The Golden Eagle (1500m) during their four-year-old seasons in Sydney. The 2020 Hawkesbury Guineas winner Dawn Passage would go on to run third in that year’s Golden Eagle trifecta.

- To Win: #1 Mr Mozart ($2.20 at time of publish)
Mr Mozart has the class edge over his rivals in the Hawkesbury Guineas field and his short quote in betting reflects that. Team Hawkes’ son of Snitzel has hit a rich vein of form this preparation and has been strong winning the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) by nearly two lengths two back at Rosehill and the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude last start over the same distance at Newcastle. Obviously carrying more weight here and gives the kilos away, but he’s the horse to beat fresh off a month break between runs with Willie Pike aboard.
