How Now Stakes 2021

Saturday September 18, 2021

Held on a weekend in mid to late September during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival at Caulfield Racecourse, the How Now Stakes is a Group 3 race for mares aged four and above.

The set weights plus penalties race is one of five Group races at the meeting that is headlined by the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1800m) and also featuring the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) and Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) races in 2021, along with the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) offering the winner a Caulfield Cup ballot exemption.

The How Now Stakes has been run and won since 1999 and takes place over a 1200m sprint distance.

Offering $200,000 in total prize money, the event is named after former star filly and 1976 Underwood Stakes winner How Now.

It gained Group 3 status in 2005 and a number of nice mares have taken out the How Now Stakes over its realtively short history including  Lovely Jubly (2003), Catkins (2013) and Secret Agenda (2016).

The How Now Stakes also now serves as a potential lead-up into the $1 million The Hunter race held at Newcastle in November.

The latest edition of the How Now Stakes ran on Saturday September 18, 2021 and was won by the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Bella Nipotina.

How Now Stakes Betting

How Now Stakes betting markets are dominated each year by in-form mares with a strong record over 1200m and those coming off good performances in key lead-up races like the Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) held the previous month. Savanna Amour (2017) was the last mare to complete the Cockram Stakes – How Now Stakes double.

Secret Agenda ($2.80 in 2016) followed by Bella Nipotina ($3.60 in 2021) are the latest favourites in How Now Stakes betting to salute for the punters.

How Now Stakes Tips

Good How Now Stakes tips include backing in-form mares coming off a top-three run in a similar grade Melbourne race earlier in the spring.

There’s been a number of recent How Now Stakes winners saluting at double-figure odds, so laying the favourite can also be profitable in How Now Stakes tipping as can backing proven Caulfield specialists at the track.

2021 How Now Stakes Tips

Our Ladbrokes’ insider How Now Stakes 2021 betting tips and Group 3 racing picks for the event will be detailed below the week of the race so stay tuned for the mares to lock-in for the win.

  • To Win: #3 Bella Nipotina ($5.50 at time of publish)

Hard to bet against this in-form Pride Of Dubai four-year-old from the Maher-Eustace stables. Craig Williams retains the ride from a favourable mid-field draw. She’s fit and improving and was good when runner-up in the Listed Chautauqua Stakes last time out. Slow conditions suit, excuses after being held up last time out at the 300m and if she handles the weight rise she’s your winner.

How Now Stakes Field

The How Now Stakes field attracts a line-up of the season’s quality short-distance mares heading towards tougher spring targets including the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) held on Caulfield Cup Day.

The Group 3 Northwood Plume Stakes (1200m) run at the same track and distance on Caulfield Guineas Day is another good next-up option for mares out of the How Now Stakes field and Winter Bride (2018) was the last to do the double.
