Ladbrokes Tip: The Kevin Hayes Stakes (Senet Peter Le Grand Stakes) can serve as a lead-up for some fillies into the Group 1 Australian Guineas.
The Kevin Hayes Stakes – run in 2024 as the Senet Peter Le Grand Stakes – is a Group 3 sprint race run now run over 1100m (down from 1200m as of 2023) for three-year-old fillies each February on C.F. Orr Stakes Day.
The set weights plus penalties event offers $200,000 in prize money and is one of the support acts on the Caulfield* race card dominated by the Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes (1400m).
*In 2023 the 2023 Kevin Hayes Stakes and C.F. Orr Stakes Day card ran at Ladbrokes Park Hillside, Sandown.
First run in 1984, the Kevin Hayes Stakes has held Group 3 status since 2014 and plenty of nice fillies have won the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival showdown including the subsequent ill-fated 2010 Australian Racehorse of the Year Typhoon Tracy (2009).
It was renamed the Senet Peter Le Grand Stakes ahead of the 2024 edition in honour of the Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) Chairman, Peter Le Grand.
The latest edition of the Kevin Hayes Stakes ran on Saturday February 10, 2024 on CF Orr Stakes Day as the Senet Peter Le Grand Stakes at Caulfield and was won in barnstorming style by the Ciaron Maher-trained favourite Estriella ($3.90F).

- To Win: #4 Brazen Style ($21 at time of publish) – BET NOW
Going for a blow-out in the last on Orr Day with Brazen Style first-up at 20/1 looking value fresh after a good campaign last time in. Shane Nichols’ consistent Brazen Beau filly is well-bred and putting together a nice record. She’s had three starts for two wins that came back-to-back at her latest two before a spell. Group 3 winner here in November’s Thoroughbred Club Stakes narrowly at a huge price and looks forgotten again. Good in her lead-up trial, great barrier (5), and Craig Newitt retains the ride. Can surprise.
